Similarly, all the phenomena that worldly people accept as ultimate truth are accepted by Madhyamikas as conventional truth. This is called the first line of reasoning. The second is: if it is a well-known convention to the Madhyamika, then it is invariably the case that the term 'true' is not applied to it in his own system. For example, if it is a well-known convention to the world, then it is invariably the case that the term 'true' is not applied to it in his system. Due to the power of co-emergent ignorance, this appearance of various interdependent phenomena is called merely conventional by the Madhyamika. Therefore, the term 'true' is not applied to it in his own system. This is called the second line of reasoning. The third is: if it is a well-known convention to either the world or the noble ones, then it is invariably the case that the Madhyamika applies the term 'worldly conventional truth' to it. For example, in the face of the consciousness of the illusion of two moons, the two moons are regarded as true. The mistaken convention taught in the context of 'agitated by unknowing sleep,' and the correct convention taught in the context of 'artificial things are conventional,' are called worldly convention and noble convention respectively. The Madhyamika applies the term 'worldly conventional truth' to both of these. This is called the third line of reasoning. In these cases, it is necessary to distinguish between what exists as a term in the Madhyamika's own system and what the Madhyamika considers to exist as a term in the world. For example, the Madhyamika's term is the selflessness of persons, while the Madhyamika explains that the world's term is the self of persons. Here, Tibetan scholars have erred by not distinguishing between the fact that worldly people do not apply the term 'true' to mistaken conventions, while Madhyamikas do apply that term to them. The fourth line of reasoning is: whatever exists in the Madhyamika's own system is invariably true and non-deceptive in his own system. For example, nirvana. In the context of cutting off the proliferation of clinging to truth, the term 'ultimate truth exists' is applied. At that time, convention does not exist, because it is false. This is called the fourth line of reasoning. The fifth line of reasoning is: if worldly convention is true, it does not necessarily follow that it also exists nominally. For example, the self of persons fabricated by non-Buddhists. This is called the fifth line of reasoning. This line of reasoning is conventional. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If this is true, then let alone whether it is universally present in the Madhyamaka system. It shows that it is not even universally present in the worldly system. Furthermore, the fifth knowledge that is not present in self-nature in the conventional reality is: whatever is naturally accepted by worldly people is not present in the self-nature of Madhyamaka. For example, the object of grasping of innate self-grasping. Worldly people believe that heat is the self-nature of fire, but Madhyamikas strive to negate it. That is the fifth reason. Others think that heat is the self-nature of fire, which must be admitted by both worldly people and Madhyamikas, because that is its conventional self-nature. Those who explain it in this way do not know how to explain the treatises on self-nature analysis. Then how should it be explained? Worldly people believe that heat is the self-nature of fire, not the self-nature of water. The reason they believe this is that heat is not newly created by fire, nor is it newly created by water. Similarly, the proponents of entities also establish reasons to believe that it is its self-nature, but Madhyamikas negate it with reasoning, such as: 'Heat, as the subject, is not the self-nature of fire, because it arises from causes and conditions.' By negating its self-nature in this way, its non-self-nature is not its self-nature. Explaining it here is ultimately to negate that it is its self-nature. For example, in the *Entering the Middle Way* it says: 'Because that is its self-nature, the eye is empty by the eye.' As previously stated, emptiness of self-nature is then proclaimed. These meanings are just as it is said: 'Self-nature is uncreated and does not depend on others.' In the commentary *Clear Words*, it says: 'If it is said that it exists from imputation, then what is it like? Its own essence is the suchness of phenomena, which is the nature of phenomena. Then, what is this nature of phenomena? It is the essence of phenomena. And what is that? It is self-nature. And what is that? It is emptiness. And what is that? It is non-self-nature. And what is that? It is thusness. And what is thusness? Because it is immutable and uncreated, and because it does not depend on others, it is called the self-nature of fire and so on.' Thus it is proclaimed. After explaining it in this way, others think that it is using the reasoning that analyzes ultimate reality to negate the ultimate self-nature of fire and so on, not the conventional self-nature. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
