Collected Teachings of the Great Abbot Shakya Chokden skc87, The Treasury of Definitive Understanding of the Great Vehicle Madhyamaka - The Ocean of Scripture and Logic, Chapter Three: Entering the Great Mansion of the Two Truths The Treasury of Definitive Understanding of the Great Vehicle Madhyamaka - The Ocean of Scripture and Logic, Chapter Three: Entering the Great Mansion of the Two Truths The subject matter is the establishment of Madhyamaka itself. The basis of Madhyamaka is the union of the two truths. The Treasury of Definitive Understanding of the Great Vehicle Madhyamaka - The Ocean of Scripture and Logic, Chapter Three: Entering the Great Mansion of the Two Truths Never shall I tread the crooked path that leads astray from the good system of Nāgārjuna (龙树). May I happily journey on the straight river of right reasoning, Constantly dwelling in the profound ocean, filled with the wealth of much hearing. May I diligently shower down hundreds of thousands of streams of activity; to that I pay homage! With the clear radiance of Chandrakīrti's (月称) good words, The snowy land was made day. But the exposition of Āryadeva (圣天), Though it made the day even brighter, it did not. When hatred, burning with jealousy's heat, draws near to my mind, I cannot bear the dimming of the light of Chandrakīrti's good words. Therefore, with impartial wisdom as the driver, Upon the chariot of hearing, I invite Chandrakīrti's good words, To rise and rise again from the east, guiding beings. Having thus offered praise and made a vow to compose, secondly, the establishment of the subject matter, Madhyamaka Divided into three: The great translator Nyima Drak (尼玛扎) said: The basis of Madhyamaka is the union of the two truths. The path of Madhyamaka is the union of skillful means and wisdom. The result of Madhyamaka is the union of the two bodies. As such, it will be explained. Firstly, regarding the basis to be known, the two truths, first opening the door to enter, extensively explaining the two truths in the manner of means and what arises from means, individually explaining the categories of reasoning that establish the ultimate truth, identifying the Madhyamaka view established by that reasoning and showing the established meaning, there are four points. The basis to be known, the two truths, first opening the door to enter The first is divided into three: Firstly, the manner of entering the two truths, after entering, the boundaries of acknowledging the two truths, how the manner of uniting the two truths is. Firstly, the manner of entering the two truths Firstly: In order to ensure that the order of entering the teachings is not mistaken, --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

First, one must acknowledge the conventional truth, because if the conventional truth is not correctly shown and understood, the ultimate truth cannot be shown or understood. If the latter is shown without showing the former, one will fall into the extreme of nihilism, and all skillful means will be abandoned. As it is said in the *Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning*: 'To seek that nature, one should first say that all exists. If one understands things and is without attachment, then after that, emptiness.' And in its commentary: 'If those whose intelligence is not mature are made to contemplate emptiness at the beginning, they will become extremely confused.' And in the *Hundred Verses*: 'Whatever one delights in, that should be spoken of first. One who has deteriorated is definitely not a vessel for the Dharma.' And it is also said extensively, 'First, avert non-merit,' and so on. After gaining certainty about the nature of the conventional truth, one must enter into the ultimate truth, because with the conventional truth alone, although one can correctly enter the palace of higher realms, without the teaching of the ultimate truth, one will not find even a part of the definitive path of goodness as it is. Although faith, compassion, and the conventional mind of enlightenment arise correctly based on the former (conventional truth), without the teaching of the latter (ultimate truth), the wisdom that realizes selflessness will not arise, and without that, peaceful Nirvana will not arise. The order of teaching should also be the same, because if the ultimate truth is taught first, one will fall into the lower realms by denigrating appearances. As it is said in the *Precious Garland*: 'In short, to view as non-existent, saying there are no results of actions, is non-merit, a cause for bad migrations; this is said to be a perverse view. In short, to view as existent, is merit, a cause for happy migrations; this is said to be a correct view. Having known, there is neither existence nor peace, the actions of sin and merit are transcended; from bad migrations and happy migrations, that is said to be supreme liberation.' And: 'The one who says 'non-existent' goes to bad migrations, the one who says 'existent' goes to happy migrations; because of fully knowing everything as it is, not relying on either, one becomes liberated.' Here, the benefits and drawbacks of acknowledging and not acknowledging the conventional truth are discussed. So, how... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
