It accords with wisdom. As it is said: 'Whatever exists by its own nature, because it is not non-existent, is permanent. To say it existed before and does not exist now, would lead to nihilism.' Therefore, some say that the *Cārvākas* (Hedonists, materialists) view of denying cause and effect is not nihilistic, because they do not accept prior existence. This is a criticism that does not elaborate on the distinction of extreme views in relation to the two truths. Because for the proponents of philosophical systems themselves, it is necessary to become nihilistic in relation to the ultimate truth, as just explained. Therefore, their view, although not nihilistic in relation to the ultimate truth, becomes nihilistic, because they deny something established by valid cognition known to the world, and what is known to the world is refuted by the world itself. Secondly, in the *Madhyamaka* (Middle Way) system itself, wisdom that views permanence and annihilation is never touched, because they do not accept any existing phenomena, and for that reason, it is impossible for it to later become non-existent. As it is said in the *Madhyamakāvatāra* (Entering the Middle Way): 'Because there is no inherent existence in the two truths, they are neither permanent nor annihilated.' And 'Because a sprout is not different from a seed, when a sprout exists, the seed does not cease. Because it is not one, it cannot be said that when a sprout exists, the seed also exists.' And in the root text it says: 'To say 'exists' is to grasp at permanence, to say 'does not exist' is to view as annihilation. Therefore, the wise should not abide in existence and non-existence.' And 'If one accepts that things exist, one will fall into the view of permanence and annihilation, because that thing is permanent and impermanent.' Therefore, from the *Tirthikas* (non-Buddhists) to the *Yogācāra* (Mind-Only school), all who assert the existence of things, in terms of appearance, agree in that they acknowledge the side of appearance, thereby avoiding the extreme of annihilation; and acknowledge the side of emptiness, thereby avoiding the extreme of permanence. However, here, when analyzing the ultimate truth, merely not accepting any existing phenomena is capable of avoiding both extremes, while the way in which those from the *Yogācāra* downwards avoid the two extremes by relying on phenomena cannot even avoid a part of the two extremes, because they have already accepted those two extremes.' It needs to be explained in this way, as the *Prasannapadā* (Clear Words) says: 'In order to reverse the reversed clinging to manifest error, we say that all things are not existent, like those without cataracts.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

'If we say that (we) do not acknowledge conventional truths, then it would lead to the extreme of nihilism, but that is not the case.' 'Only the Madhyamaka view does not fall into the extremes of existence and non-existence, while other schools such as the Yogacara do.' Here it is said: The essence of the ocean of wisdom of many great intellectuals, The fearless warrior polished with the subtlety of scripture and reason, The nectar that naturally flows from the mouth of discernment, Today, it is bestowed upon the throats of many intelligent ones. From 'The Treasury of Thoroughly Ascertaining the Mahayana Madhyamaka', the third chapter, which is 'Opening the Gate of Liberation for Entering the Great Mansion of the Two Truths'. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
