When taking an example as a basis to analyze whether something is one or many, for example, we do not concede that a sprout exists. Because if we concede that, the sprout would be unable to withstand rational analysis. When we concede that a sprout exists on the conventional level and engage in acceptance and rejection, we do not analyze it with reason, because if we were to analyze it that way, we would not be able to find a basis for conventional designation. Even so, the two truths do not become separate. Because at the time when it appears as a sprout, and at the time when it is established as existing on the conventional level, it is itself empty of characteristics such as one and many. It is not that reason destroys the appearance of the sprout and creates a new emptiness. Nor is it that ignorance covers up the sprout's inherent emptiness of characteristics such as one and many, and creates a new appearance of the sprout. Rather, at the very moment of appearance, it is empty; and at the very moment of emptiness, it appears. As it is said in the scriptures: 'Form is emptiness, emptiness is form.' And in the Commentary on the Awakening Mind, it says: 'The ultimate is not different from the conventional; it is not an object of observation. The conventional is said to be emptiness; emptiness alone is the conventional. Because without it, it cannot arise; just like something made and impermanence.' Therefore, do not think that appearance contradicts emptiness. Because thinking that way is a mistake, as it is clinging to an emptiness that does not even exist in name. So, what is the meaning of emptiness? It is dependent arising. And what is the meaning of that? It is appearance without inherent existence. And what is the meaning of without inherent existence? It does not mean that the appearance itself does not exist even in name, but rather that the inherent existence that ordinary people grasp onto in the appearance is not found when analyzed by the reason of the noble ones. If the union of appearance and emptiness is like that, then does emptiness exist in the realm of appearance, and does appearance exist in the realm of the view that takes emptiness as its object? It is not like that either. Although after a noble one's training, the two minds that take appearance and emptiness as their objects arise simultaneously, the mind that takes appearance as its object is consciousness, not wisdom; and the mind that takes emptiness as its object is wisdom, not consciousness. This is because taking appearance as an object is from the aspect of being defiled by ignorance, while taking emptiness as an object is from the aspect of being separated from that. For example, just as the illusion of hair and the emptiness of it are united, but one is not perceived when the other is perceived. Therefore, the appearance and emptiness of the object... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Just as fusing the two, the view and practice must also be combined. From the perspective of the view, although focusing on emptiness, one does not cling to appearances; from the perspective of practice, although focusing on appearances, one does not take emptiness as an object. When the two are combined, the view can prevent clinging, and the practice can enter the realm of acceptance and rejection. As it is said: 'Appearances do not abandon the path of karma, emptiness does not give rise to inherent clinging. The inseparable union of the Middle Way, this supreme accomplishment without error is rare.' This is what the Tibetan scholars say. Next, refuting the extremes examined by others. Second, refuting the extremes examined by others: Some who came later to the Land of Snows (Tibet) say: 'Phenomena such as sprouts exist in conventional truth but do not exist in ultimate truth.' They unanimously say that this is the tenet of the Madhyamikas. This is unreasonable for two reasons: the direct reason and the demonstration of another established meaning. First, to accept it in that way is to fall away from the demarcation of the two truths. When establishing conventional truth, if one examines with reasoning and says that such and such a phenomenon does not exist ultimately, then one falls away from the way of establishing the conventional truth of that phenomenon. When establishing ultimate truth, if one examines with reasoning and asserts that such and such a phenomenon exists, then one has asserted true existence, and therefore one falls away from non-existence. So how should it be? When establishing conventional truth, one must accept 'it exists conventionally,' and when establishing ultimate truth, one must only say 'it does not exist ultimately.' Furthermore, in this way, to say that, it may be permissible up to the point of explaining the reasoning that refutes self, but it is not the ultimate system of Madhyamaka, because it has accepted the extreme of elaboration. Also, the tenet that the people of the Land of Snows unanimously say, 'If it exists conventionally, it must exist, and if it does not exist ultimately, it must not exist,' is also a mistake, because it must be said in reverse. The reason for this is that 'does not exist ultimately' refers to a conclusion established by reasoning that examines ultimate truth, and 'exists conventionally' must be explained as something that is imputed to exist by a mistaken concept. No matter how high the meaning of existing conventionally is, it must be established by worldly valid cognition, and this system does not consider that to be valid cognition.
