If you understand it this way, it is easy to recognize the views of permanence and annihilation, and it can be summarized naturally. If you understand it this way, it is easy to recognize the views of permanence and annihilation. First, there are views of permanence and annihilation relative to conventional truth, and the same relative to ultimate truth. The first is to view the phenomena of conventional truth, such as cause and effect, as truly existing, and to view them as not existing even in name. These two can also be divided into two types: imputed and innate. These views can also be divided into two types: viewing the person as permanent or annihilated, and viewing phenomena as permanent or annihilated. The antidote to the first, viewing the person as permanent or annihilated, is also found in the Hearer Vehicle schools. The antidote to the second is only found in the Great Vehicle practitioners. The first is the view that the self is permanent, and the view that the self is annihilated when the aggregates are destroyed is an extreme. The wisdom that sees that there is no substantial self on top of the aggregates, and that it is merely labeled there, is called the Middle Way that is the antidote to the view of extremes, and it is common to all our own schools. The second, clinging to phenomena, such as the Mind-Only school's view that external objects and the apprehended and apprehender are substantially different, is the view of permanence. The view that the consciousness of appearance is not true even conventionally, and that the wisdom of non-duality is not true even ultimately, is the view of annihilation. The Middle Way that is the antidote to this is explained as the wisdom that sees that the apprehended and apprehender, etc., are not true even conventionally, that the dependent is true conventionally, and that the perfectly established is true ultimately. As it is said: 'Because of existence, there is non-existence; because of non-existence, there is existence; this is the Middle Way.' According to the Madhyamaka school, the imputed views of permanence and annihilation relative to conventional truth can be abandoned by the views of the world itself, because these are the inverted conventional truths of the world. The innate clinging to extremes relative to conventional truth cannot be eliminated until this view of emptiness of inherent existence is realized, because the Middle Way that eliminates the two extremes is limited to this. When establishing conventional truths, it is not necessary to eliminate these two innate extremes, because if they are eliminated, one will fall away from the truth of names. Therefore, what is to be eliminated here are the two extremes relative to ultimate truth, and what eliminates them is only the view of the Middle Way. Second, recognizing the two extremes relative to ultimate truth. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

A common view that is easy to hold is: If the Madhyamaka school itself asserts that there is a 'existent' dharma, then it must be admitted that it is permanent, because there can never be a time when it ceases to exist. In general, if an 'existent' dharma, when analyzed by Madhyamaka reasoning, ceases to exist, then it would lead to emptiness becoming the cause of the destruction of things. In this way, if some dharmas are regarded as being established by valid cognition based on Madhyamaka reasoning, then that wisdom is called the view of permanence, because some dharmas are mistaken cognitions that cling to existence after being analyzed by the reasoning famous in their respective schools by the proponents of tenets. For example, like the thought of clinging to true emptiness as existent. Then, when explaining the reasoning of refuting self in the middle, isn't this also an admission? No. When applying the labels of knowledge and expression, although it is said to be admitted in this way, it is not the tenet of Madhyamaka, because it is merely a designation by worldly convention. Then, for worldly people, is the innate conceptualization that believes in the existence of eyes, etc., also admitted as the view of permanence? Yes, because what is known as the innate view of extremes is not a different kind from it. Having thus identified the view of permanence, what about the view of annihilation? It doesn't matter whose tenet it is, whether it is a worldly speaker, a realist, or a nihilist. If a dharma established by valid cognition, through the analysis of reasoning, or whether it depends on or does not depend on other destructive factors, eventually ceases to exist, then that is called annihilation, like the interruption of a river's flow. Therefore, that erroneous view is called the view of annihilation, because it is a defiled wisdom that believes that something that previously existed later disappeared. When the Madhyamaka school establishes its own tenet, the view that all dharmas do not exist is not the view of annihilation that depends on that meaning, because it was not previously admitted to exist. It's like thinking that a rabbit has no horns. Furthermore, when the Madhyamaka school establishes its own tenet, when cutting off the proliferation of views, it is impossible to think that all dharmas do not exist, but when applying the labels of knowledge and expression, if one says that everything does not exist in conventional truth, then this is a denial of worldly appearance, and therefore it is a false conventional truth, because the world itself can negate it. If one says that it does not exist in ultimate truth, then this is clinging to what is established by valid cognition with an object of non-negation, and therefore it is the view of permanence, because it clings to ultimate truth as real. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
