In 'Ornament of the Middle Way', it says: 'First conduct a correct search, thereby ascertain the nature of ultimate truth, then towards the world dwelling in the darkness of wrong views, generate universal compassion.' Does this mean that those with sharp faculties first realize the ultimate truth and then engage in the conventional? It is not so. This merely indicates one aspect of the order of generating skillful means and wisdom in one's being, not the manner of engaging with the two truths. Because emptiness without prior realization of the conventional is no different from the emptiness of the tirthikas. Without that prior realization, one cannot even proceed to the annihilationist nirvana of the shravakas. As it is also said: 'Without relying on conventions, the ultimate cannot be taught. Without realizing the ultimate, nirvana cannot be attained.' Therefore, many ways of studying the ultimate truth without first studying the teachings on conventional truth that appear in the Buddha's scriptures, were previously called 'sudden path', 'white single penetration', 'Ati Yoga', etc. in the snowy land of Tibet. Then, there are two orders of studying the ultimate truth: according to the texts of the scriptures and according to the texts of the Svatantrika school, and according to the texts of Chandrakirti. The first involves engaging with the ultimate truth through severing the proliferation of clinging to truth, and engaging with the actual ultimate truth through severing the proliferation of non-truth. As it is also said: 'In the middle, negate the self, and finally negate all views.' etc., as quoted extensively above. That is, first, during the stage of application, although the aspect of mere appearance is not obstructed, whatever aspect of conventional truth there is, it is asserted and accepted that all of it is simply non-existent. That alone does not turn into a nihilistic view, because the aspect of mere appearance is not obstructed here, nor even in the presence of the Buddha's wisdom. And the aspect of truth that is negated here was not previously accepted as established by valid cognition. Even so, it is a view that regards emptiness as a sign, so it is not a very effective view. The reasoning that establishes that view is the reasoning of being separate from one and many, etc., and the inference based on that is the mind that has the object of realizing that view. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, the very non-existence of what has been established is also called non-existent. Even so, this does not fall into the view of annihilation, because to fall into that, one must be attached to non-existence, but here it is to eliminate that attachment. The reasoning for establishing this is: 'If there is even a little that is not empty,' etc., and 'Conditioned things are not truly established, know,' etc. The intellect that relies on this is also established only from the aspect of realizing freedom from elaboration, not from the aspect of subsequent cognition, because from that aspect, it is a mind of apprehending characteristics. The second point is that in Candrakirti's treatises, it seems unnecessary to separately establish the reasoning for eliminating the elaboration of non-existence, because in the beginning, when cutting off the elaboration of the grasping of true existence, true existence has already been refuted, and non-existence has not been established. The boundary of entering into the acceptance of the two truths. Two, how to accept the boundary of the two truths. If it is explained from the perspective of a person who has generated the view of Madhyamaka in their mind-stream, it will be easy to understand. Therefore, as long as that person does not investigate with Madhyamaka reasoning, they will accept the conventional truth as it is known to exist in the world. Once they take a single phenomenon as the basis for investigation and engage in reasoning, then not only does that phenomenon taken as the basis for investigation not exist, but all phenomena are similar in reasoning, so they do not accept that any conventional phenomena exist. In short, first, there is a general indication, and then a detailed explanation, including: first, the way of accepting the conventional truth; in the middle, the rationality of accepting the ultimate truth; and finally, the reasoning for not accepting anything. First, the way of accepting the conventional truth. First, if we speak from the perspective of worldly convention, there are two types of conventional truth that Madhyamikas speak of: that which appears to the co-emergent mind, and that which appears to the mind defiled by temporary causes of delusion. From the perspective of the Madhyamikas' own system, there is no difference between these two, because both are equally mistaken. Why? Because both appear even though they do not exist, like hairs appearing to someone with cataracts. So, what do worldly people call these two? Worldly people will call them 'conventional truth of the nature of the world' and 'ultimate truth,' and also use the names 'correct' and 'inverted,' rather than 'correct conventional truth' and 'incorrect conventional truth.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
