It is the conventional truth, which is explained as a means. From that explanation, again, in terms of the conventional truth of yogis, impermanence, emptiness, selflessness, etc., those dharmas that are spoken of as the conventional truth of yogis, even if they are not established as existent by worldly valid cognition, but from the aspect of becoming the object of the mind of conceptual grasping, are generally worldly conventional truths, because they are not inverted conventional truths, so they are also established as existent in worldly customs. Moreover, the reasons for refuting the birth of self and others, even if they are recognized in the world itself, the way in which they refute it depends entirely on the treatises, because the way in which they refute it is not recognized in the world. This difference must be understood. Furthermore, when establishing the conventional truth, one should not assert that phenomena such as fire, which are recognized in the world itself, are empty of truth or empty of inherent existence, because if one asserts that, one will fall away from the first truth. Why? Because asserting the inherent existence of fire and asserting that it is empty are contradictory. This is contradictory because the meaning of being empty of inherent existence is that when one thinks with reasoning that considers the state of affairs, heat is not established as the inherent existence of fire, and if heat is not established as the inherent existence of fire, then the conventional truth that depends on fire will be lost. When that is said, some say that fire is also empty of inherent existence in name, empty of its own entity, and empty of its own characteristics. Those people are certainly falling away from the truth of the name of fire, and this basis that needs to be examined in detail is also that phenomena such as fire are not established as true even in name, and this is also clear that it is not the way to establish nominal truth, and if it is not established there, then it will not be true in convention, and if it is not true there, how can it be a conventional truth? One should think like this. As it is said, 'If with merit, one speaks of emptiness as harm, like medicine applied at the wrong time, it turns into poison, doesn't it?' So it is said in the Hundred Treatises. Those are the explanations of how to accept the conventional truth. The following is about the rationality of accepting the ultimate truth. Secondly, regarding the way of accepting the ultimate truth, there are two aspects: how it arises from the treatises of the Sutra School and the Svatantrika School; and briefly showing the unique system of Chandrakirti.

How views arise from external and own systems: First, as previously explained, after the worldly accepted ultimate truth, or the correct conventional truth established by the Madhyamaka school's terminology, is established by the measure known to the world, one should then proceed to accept the ultimate truth. By what reasoning? It relies on the reasoning that refutes the self from the root texts, and the reasoning that cuts off the proliferation of clinging to truth from one's own system. How to accept it? There are two aspects to this: first, the reasons for not accepting conventional truth; second, the reasons for having to accept ultimate truth. Reasons for not accepting conventional truth: First, there are two types: scriptural and logical. The scriptural is divided into the root scripture and the special scripture of Chandrakirti (Moon Fame). The first is as it is said: 'The Buddhas teach the Dharma, relying on the two truths.' As it appears, two systems are established in the Madhyamaka treatises: the system of establishing conventional truth and the system of establishing ultimate truth. The first system must be accepted by the Madhyamika (Middle Way follower) as the basis, but it is not the general Madhyamaka's own system, nor is it a unique own system, because this establishment is not established by valid cognition, but by false appearances, and because it is a system common to the world. Therefore, the unique own system of the Madhyamika is only the second. Having understood this, when establishing the Madhyamaka's own system, the conventional truth that depends on that particular occasion is not accepted at all, because none of them can be established by any valid cognition of the Madhyamaka's own system. If it were established, it would be established by either the direct perception of a yogi or the inference based on the Madhyamaka's reason. To establish this, first, the root scripture is, as it is said in the 'Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning': 'For the sake of need, the Victorious Ones speak of 'I' and 'mine,' likewise the aggregates, elements, and sources; therefore, they speak of them.' Know the need for speaking of conventional truth. Also, as it is said in the same text: 'Explaining the great elements, etc., is completely gathered into the nature of consciousness; knowing that, one will be separated, is it not a wrong imputation?' Know its intention. Also, as it is said: 'Nirvana is the only truth.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
