The thought that 'it is not a negation' should also be eliminated, because it must be admitted conversely. It is like this: Fire, as the subject of the proposition, is empty of inherent existence, because it is dependently originated. This is a Madhyamaka (Middle Way) reasoning. At that time, the self-nature that is being negated refers to the object of apprehension of the clinging that the co-emergent ignorance (lhan cig skyes pa'i ma rig pa) grasps and imputes as the self-nature of fire. That object is called the conventional self-nature of fire, because conventional minds grasp it as its self-nature. In short, the Madhyamaka reasoning proves that whatever self-nature a conventional mind grasps for any dharma, that dharma does not exist as it is grasped. So, what is its self-nature? The non-existence of its conventional self-nature, that is its self-nature. In the middle, when the reasoning of refuting the self becomes powerful, it must be admitted in that way. Similarly, when 'not truly existent' (bden par med de) and 'without own-being' (ngo bo nyid med de) are made the subject of proof, it is also negating the conventional truth and the conventional own-being. Otherwise, if the ultimate truth and the ultimate own-being are negated without first negating the conventional self-nature, then it will not be possible to negate, and it will be too extreme to contradict oneself with the reasoning of self-establishment. 'Not ultimately existent' (don dam par med de) refers to the ultimate in the worldly sense, not the ultimate in the Madhyamaka sense. Because other schools such as the Realists do not accept that conventional objects such as vases exist in the face of the ultimate that the Madhyamikas accept. And, if this co-emergent deluded mind is grasped as having an ultimate object, and it is accepted that it exists in the face of that, then it should be negated, that is, 'not ultimately existent'. If it exists ultimately, then it must exist in the face of the reasoning that thinks about the state of affairs, but it does not exist there. After explaining in this way, if someone asks, 'Then, what is ultimately existent?' Then, what is accepted by the world as not ultimately existent, that is ultimately existent. This way of imputing and expressing through subsequent cognition is also only valid in the middle, when the reasoning of refuting the self becomes powerful. In short, later Tibetan scholars easily accept that vases and so on are 'not truly existent', 'not ultimately existent', 'without inherent existence', 'without own-being', and so on, and they do not doubt it at all. However, regarding the conventional truth itself... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If one thinks that not accepting conventional truth has many faults, it is merely playing with words without truly understanding its meaning. If the Svatantrika-Madhyamaka has its own tenets, then there must be a valid cognition (pramana) to establish it. If a pramana establishes it, then it can only be through direct perception or inference. In that case, all conventional truths such as a pot, etc., would be cognized by either inference or the yogic direct perception that arises from it. If that were the case, then the inherent existence, truth, and ultimate existence that the Madhyamikas accept would become ultimate truths. Therefore, in this context of establishing the Madhyamaka tenets, not accepting conventional truth and the conventional truth that worldly people consider to be ultimate truth are actually the same thing. Therefore, after reasoning based on the words of Chandrakirti, it has been explained how valid cognition cannot establish conventional truth. The views of Shantarakshita and Kamalashila are that when establishing the tenet of emptiness of inherent existence, they do not accept conventional truth. Because their view is to enter the great ocean of definitive meaning through the stages of entering the Yogacara school of thought. When they reach the Cittamatra school, which is that everything is mind, and external objects are truly existent, then even nominally, external objects are negated. When they enter the tenet of false appearance, then the consciousness of object appearance is also negated. Then, when they enter the tenet of emptiness of inherent existence, the non-dual consciousness, the self-awareness, self-illumination, and the valid cognition established by one's own system are negated. Therefore, next is refuting the arguments against them: If conventional truth is not accepted at this time, then ultimate truth will also not be accepted, because you consider ultimate truth to be conventional truth. This doubt will definitely arise. The answer is that we do not accept it as such at this time, because this is the time to cut off the proliferation of clinging to reality. After cutting off the proliferation of clinging to non-reality, we will accept it as conventional truth, and the way in which we do not accept it as existent will be explained immediately. Another argument is: Even if the Prasangika-Madhyamaka view is like that, if the Svatantrika does not accept conventional entities as existing in their own system, then this contradicts accepting that things are established by valid cognition of common appearance. This doubt will also arise. The answer is, as has been said before, the sign, example, and common subject... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
