Therefore, even if someone says that, what will happen from that? Well, that opponent who speaks in that way, as a topic, must speak of either existence or non-existence, because he speaks of either existence or non-existence. The subject and reason are accepted, and the pervasion is established by valid cognition. How is the reason? That, as a topic, must have spoken there, because he spoke of both existence and non-existence. How is the reason accepted? That, as a topic, must have spoken of non-existence, because he said 'it is not existence'. Also, that, as a topic, must have spoken of existence, because he said 'it is not non-existence'. The three turns of the two inferences, earlier and later, are explicitly accepted. In short, you who speak in that way have erred because you have not distinguished between 'speaking' and 'understanding' in arguments based on speculation. For example, when a logician proves that a sentient being is a unity of life, body, and self, if he admits that there is neither following nor reversing in the homogeneous class, he will be admitting a contradiction. Also, when an opponent, having understood the three modes by valid cognition, speaks of sound as impermanent through the reason of being produced, and also says that sound is permanent, he will be saying that sound is both permanent and impermanent. If, through the knowledge that understands the true meaning of two negations, one must say that it is either not existent or non-existent, then that is not abiding in the nature of mindfulness, because it is not a negation of existence. Also, if contradiction is impossible, then saying that pointing out internal contradictions in the admissions of those who assert entities is futile is completely unreasonable, because the Madhyamikas, to demonstrate the category of contradiction, cite the example of those who assert entities admitting contradiction. In general, even when the Madhyamikas use the term 'freedom from extremes', it is not that they do not admit that existence and non-existence are contradictory, because they say that if there is existence, it contradicts non-existence, and if there is non-existence, it contradicts existence, and that for both existence and non-existence, the three categories of neither two nor non-two are impossible. Just because of that, it does not necessarily follow that if it is not existence, it must be non-existence, because there is no contradiction between admitting that the three categories of non-two are impossible and admitting non-two. Secondly, regarding the unreasonableness of the meaning, there are two aspects: showing that the refutation is not reasonable according to the system of speculation, nor according to the general system of scriptures, and also that it is not reasonable according to the system of Madhyamaka. The first is: that such a refutation is not reasonable even in the system of speculation. As it is said: 'Contradiction and having means, establishment and without refutation, for negation, what is valid cognition, this is not following reason, speaking, etc.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Although establishing 'all-knowing' (ས་ཀུན་མཁྱེན,sarvakāla-jñāna, सर्वकालज्ञान,all-time knowing) and 'no other worlds' are established, by establishing the contradictory of what can be seen, and by establishing the argument of what cannot be seen, these two reasonings can be used to negate the existence of one thing, thereby establishing its non-existence. However, for other invisible things, such as using 'invisible' as a reason, although it can negate that a thing must exist, it cannot establish that it must not exist, as it is said: 'Depending on specific reasons, the non-existence of some things can be known.' This means that when the thing to be negated is likely to appear, it can be established that it must not exist; and when it is unlikely to appear, it cannot be established that it must not exist. Therefore, when saying 'it does not exist in any ultimate truth and conventional truth,' this only refers to the negation of existence, and does not necessarily mean going to extremes. And when saying 'it is non-existent,' because the object it refers to has been excluded, it negates its existence, which completely goes to extremes. However, understanding the true meaning of these two negations is the view of the Nyaya school, as it is said: 'What is the difference between the negation of negation and affirmation?' Even according to this view, one cannot affirm existence by negating non-existence, as it is said: 'Therefore, for extremely hidden things, the certainty of existence and non-existence does not exist.' Although existence and non-existence are mutually incompatible opposites, they are not mutually exclusive opposites, so there may be a third case. Existence and non-existence are mutually exclusive opposites, so in reality there cannot be a third case, but in consciousness there may be a third case. Furthermore, when arguing that 'sound is impermanent,' if the debater says: 'Because you say sound is impermanent, it is impermanent.' Or say: 'Because you say sound is not permanent, it is permanent.' And admit the universality of this reasoning, then the nature of permanence is established through valid cognition. If the debater says: 'I neither say it is permanent nor say it is impermanent.' Then the Madhyamaka can retort: 'Then, what fault is there in saying that the sprout neither exists nor does not exist?' Any fault you point out applies equally to the former, so you will be overwhelmed by huge contradictions. If there is no fault in saying this, then please point out what is the root of the dispute? Secondly, in general, if it is said that the classification of the fourteen unknowable questions in the scriptures is unreasonable, then, regarding the question of whether I and the world are permanent or impermanent... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
