Gross and permanent things are generally said to be non-existent and untrue. Yogacarins also admit that the apprehended and the apprehender, the two imputed ones, are not true, but they are admitted to exist nominally. If you admit it like that, what will change? Then, for those who claim tenets, on each phenomenon established by valid cognition, they should admit the unique freedom from extremes taught in the Madhyamaka school, and it should be realized by valid cognition. Because valid cognition realizes that on it there exists true existence and nominal non-existence, or both, or neither. So what is the meaning of freedom from extremes in our own system? For example, fire having the nature of heat is the extreme of 'existence', which is the view of those who cling to the conventional truth. The phenomenon, that is, fire, does not have the nature of heat, which is the extreme of 'non-existence', which is the view of those who cling to the ultimate truth. Not clinging to either of these two is the Middle Way, which is the view of those who do not cling to either of the two truths. Therefore, it is necessary to avoid clinging to either of the two truths. As it is said in the Ratnavali: 'The views of self and no-self, therefore the Great Sage forbade. Seeing, hearing, etc., the Sage said, are neither true nor false. If it differs from the other side, neither of them is the real meaning. Looking at that ultimate meaning, the world transcends truth and falsehood. Therefore, in truth and ultimately, he does not say that it exists or does not exist. Whoever is like that in every way, that which is not, is omniscient. He taught how there is an extreme, no extreme, both, and neither.' According to other commentators, it should be explained as liberation from truly seeing selflessness, and transcendence of truth from falsehood. If so, then truly seeing self and falsely seeing truth are both included in self and truth. Therefore, explaining the extremes separately is like the teacher not knowing. The explanation of having an extreme and not having an extreme should also be that the extreme is not truly existent, nor is the extreme completely non-existent. Therefore, all the scriptures of the Great and Small Vehicles are bound to be reversed. Furthermore, in your side, like this, as it is said in the scripture: 'The existent goes to the happy realms.' The 'existent' taught by the scripture is you who claim to be Madhyamikas. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
