One should not desire existence or non-existence. If it transforms because of non-existence, why doesn't it transform because of existence? If existence is refuted, in reality, non-existence is established. Similarly, if non-existence is refuted, why isn't existence established? Those who do not hold or contemplate non-existence in reality, and whose minds are without (Tibetan: སེམས་, Sanskrit Devanagari: चित्त, Sanskrit Romanization: citta, Chinese literal meaning: mind) for the sake of enlightenment, how can they speak of non-existence? Those who speak of the person as aggregates, such as the Samkhya (enumerationists), Uluka (owl-like), and naked ascetics, if they perish, ask them whether they have transcended existence and non-existence. Therefore, the Buddhas say that the teaching is immortal, a profound teaching that transcends existence and non-existence, and should be regarded as the essence of the Dharma. This knowledge you speak of contradicts your own assertions. How so? As it is said in the scriptures, refuting existence requires admitting non-existence; refuting non-existence requires admitting existence. Having established the former position, the idea that refuting one necessitates admitting the other is valid for outsiders, but this fault does not apply to those who hold the essence of the Buddha's teachings. However, you have accepted the former position stated there. Therefore, according to your view, refuting true existence requires admitting nominal non-existence; refuting nominal non-existence requires admitting true existence. This must be explained as the meaning of the former position. When responding to this, it is reasonable to conclude that nominal existence and true non-existence have the same meaning. But if it is not established in this way, and instead, the response is that neither is admitted, then the proof and what is to be proven are the same. The Samkhyas and others say that if one is negated at this time, the other must be admitted. If explained in the way you desire, that is also unnecessary. Why? Because the Samkhyas say that transformations are not ultimately existent but are admitted to be nominally existent, which is their fundamental tenet. If so, when Buddhists refute it, they must be able to refute by saying: Transformations, as phenomena, should also be nominally non-existent because they are not ultimately existent. But in reality, they cannot refute in this way. How do we know that this is their fundamental assertion? In the auto-commentary of the Madhyamakalankara (Ornament of the Middle Way), it says: 'The great sage Kapila said, the nature of the qualities is supreme, it does not enter the path of seeing, whatever enters the path of seeing is very deceptive like an illusion.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
