If that 'existence' does not exist, then its opposite, 'non-existence,' should also not exist. Because 'existence' does not exist, 'non-existence' also does not exist. When analyzed in this way, something like a sprout is neither 'existent' nor 'non-existent,' because each is negated. It is also not 'both existent and non-existent.' If there were something called 'both existent and non-existent,' then its opposite, 'neither existent nor non-existent,' should also exist, but because 'both existent and non-existent' does not exist, 'neither existent nor non-existent' also does not exist. In this way, when a sprout is free from all extremes of elaboration, that kind of elaboration exists only in the context of the conceptual thought that grasps it and the expressions that articulate it. This is the tenet of establishing freedom from elaboration as conventional truth. When the reasoning of Madhyamaka is applied, it also does not exist, because its opposite, 'non-elaboration,' exists. Similarly, by analogy, it can be understood that the sprout is free from all four extremes. Thus, both the subject, the sprout, and its nature, freedom from elaboration, are conventional truths, because they appear to the mind that is deluded by temporary and ultimate causes of delusion, and because they cannot be found when analyzed by reasoning that distinguishes existence and non-existence. As it is said in the Great Commentary on the Eight Thousand Verses: 'Because it cannot withstand detailed analysis, it is conventional.' If it cannot withstand analysis and there is no opportunity for it to become an object of false perception, then it cannot be established as conventional truth. This is what must be firmly grasped here. Thus, everything that is done within the realm of sound and concept is conventional truth. At that time, all of that does not go beyond one of the extremes of elaboration in the context of the subject's sound and concept. When it exists within the realm of sound and concept, because it and it are taken as the basis for analysis, and it is not the time when it is analyzed by the reasoning of Madhyamaka. When it and it are taken as the basis for analysis, it and it do not accept any extreme of elaboration, nor do they make any vows. At that time, there is no acceptance or vow whatsoever. Considering that meaning, as it is said in the *Vigrahavyavartani*: 'If I had any vows, then I would have this fault. Because I have no vows, I am faultless.' And 'If by perception, etc., something is determined, if it needs to be established or refuted, because that does not exist, I have no blame.' Like this, without carefully distinguishing the above-mentioned differences, some Tibetans raise the issue of acceptance and vows to the Madhyamikas. 如实了知故,’” ], "english_translations": [ "Some say 'nothing exists,' and then hurl a series of refutations to refute that claim. As the wise have said, 'Using reasoning, stating various viewpoints, but the response is irrelevant and laughable.' This is similar to the situation of some who make assertions, who do not distinguish the boundary between the two truths, do not distinguish the two stages of cutting off the proliferation of clinging to reality and cutting off the proliferation of clinging to non-reality, and do not understand the order of cutting off proliferation with view and applying terms with knowledge and speech. They generally say that there is no assertion or commitment. Some, although they distinguish these, the refuter causes the sun of refutation to rise before the dawn of the former. Therefore, for later Tibetans, there are two ways to refute by questioning: one is to rely on pure scriptures to refute the views of others and establish one's own views; the other is to prevent the ashes thrown by others from falling on oneself, but rather on the thrower himself.", "For later Tibetans, there are two ways to refute by questioning: one is to rely on pure scriptures to refute the views of others and establish one's own views.", "The first way, as it is said in the *Essence of Wisdom, A Compendium*: 'Not existent, not non-existent, not both existent and non-existent, not the nature of both, liberated from the four extremes, this is understood by the Madhyamika.' What is the meaning of this, ask the later Tibetans? If they consistently say, 'Not truly existent, and not non-existent in convention,' etc., that is acceptable. If they accept it according to the literal meaning, they will be overwhelmed by an inexhaustible mass of contradictions. Some explain, 'Not clinging to existence,' etc. Others, who are not disciplined in discernment, say, 'Existence is not true, and non-existence is not true,' etc., and claim that this is the meaning of being free from extremes. In any of these three ways, they generally acknowledge that all phenomena exist, but do not exist in ultimate truth, and claim that this is the meaning of being free from extremes. But this is not reasonable. As it is said in the *Precious Garland*: 'Holding that the world exists or does not exist is ignorance; if there is ignorance, there is no liberation. The one who holds to non-existence goes to the lower realms; the one who holds to existence goes to the higher realms; because of fully knowing the truth, one does not rely on the two extremes and becomes liberated; because of fully knowing the truth,'" ] } --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
