Regarding how to establish the conventional truth (Tibetan: ཀུན་རྫོབ་ཀྱི་བདེན་པ་, kun rdzob kyi bden pa, relative truth) as conventional when dividing the two truths (Tibetan: བདེན་པ་གཉིས།, bden pa gnyis, two truths) into two, and how to also apply the term 'conventional truth' to the ultimate truth (Tibetan: དོན་དམ་པའི་བདེན་པ་, don dam pa'i bden pa, ultimate truth) when dividing it into two. The first method has already been explained in detail above. The second method is during the explanation of the reasoning for refuting the self, the characteristics and examples of the ultimate truth as explained in the scriptures, and when they appear in conceptual thought during the explanation and listening as they are explained, and after they appear, applying terms to them—all of these are conventional truths because they are labeled by sound and conceptual thought. Whatever is a conventional truth is not truly existent, because all of it is something obtained through false perception. So, for emptiness (Tibetan: སྟོང་ཉིད།, stong nyid, emptiness) and nirvana (Tibetan: མྱ་ངན་ལས་འདས་པ།, mya ngan las 'das pa, nirvana), which negate one aspect of elaboration, it is reasonable to establish them as commonly accepted ultimate truths and true conventional truths, as explained in the Svatantrika (Tibetan: རང་རྒྱུད།, rang rgyud) scriptures. But, is the ultimate reality that is free from all elaborations also accepted as a conventional truth? It is also a conventional truth because it is labeled by knowledge and expression. As it is said in the sutra commonly cited by both Prāsaṅgika (Tibetan: ཐལ་འགྱུར།, thal 'gyur) and Svatantrika masters in the Bodhicaryāvatāra (Sanskrit: Bodhicaryāvatāra) by Śāntideva (Sanskrit: Śāntideva): 'For the ultimate truth, there is not even the activity of mind, what need is there to mention letters?' So, what is the characteristic of the ultimate truth? I cannot express it, because even the noble ones cannot express it. As it is said in the sutra: 'The Prajñāpāramitā (Sanskrit: Prajñāpāramitā) is inexpressible, unthinkable, and unutterable.' And in the commentary on the Differentiation of the Two Truths (Tibetan: བདེན་གཉིས་རྣམ་འབྱེད།, bden gnyis rnam 'byed), the sutra is quoted: 'Mañjuśrī (Sanskrit: Mañjuśrī), as a youth, said to Vimalakīrti (Sanskrit: Vimalakīrti): 'Noble son, we have each explained our own teachings, now please you also show the gate of non-duality.' Then, Vimalakīrti remained silent. Then, Mañjuśrī gave praise, saying: 'Noble son, that to which letters, sounds, and expressions do not enter is the way bodhisattvas enter the gate of non-duality. Well done, well done!' As it is said in the sutra.' After quoting this sutra, he summarized its meaning in verses, saying: Mañjuśrī asked the right question, the son of the Victorious One (referring to Vimalakīrti) remained silent. For both, the reality that is separate, if it is other-powered reality, then why ask the question? The son of the Victorious One therefore did not speak. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Will remain. Those intelligent beings who understand signs and know reason, in whatever way, should express their own realization. Therefore, it is not appropriate to speak or tell. Otherwise, how would those who speak of reason express the ultimate perfection of the nature of all sounds? How would they clearly explain reason? Because in that, there is nothing to be expressed. Therefore, even if asked, one should not speak, but extensively explain the principle of abiding. Thus it is said. The Commentary says: 'The ultimate truth of the noble ones is that nothing is spoken.' Thus it is said. Then, in the commentary on Distinguishing the Two Truths, it is said that the ultimate truth is not the conventional truth, because it arises only from the final words. Why? Because it is said that it is not non-deceptive. Has this not been said? Such an explanation is one where the reasoning of refuting self is made dominant in the middle, and it is done by dividing the knowable into two truths. Such a division is also established in relation to the minds of ordinary beings, as stated in the Sixty Stanzas of Reasoning. Then, if one cannot express its essence, does one admit that it does not exist? That is not the case. The suchness that is to be experienced by the noble ones of the Great Vehicle in the samadhi wisdom of self-awareness is also not non-existent, and if it is that, it must be its essence. Then, what is that suchness? It cannot be truly grasped, because it is beyond expression. Then, if it exists, it will universally become the conventional truth, because one cannot grasp the essence of the other? It is not certain. For example, according to your view, if it exists, it must not be the number of the subtle particles of the pillar in front, because it cannot be grasped. Then, what is it? If it exists, it must be the ultimate truth, because if it exists, it must be established by the valid cognition known to the Madhyamikas. If it is the conventional truth, then establishing it is contradictory. Even so, if it is the ultimate truth, it does not necessarily have to exist, because it must be free from extremes such as existence and non-existence. Then, the ultimate truth, the subject of discussion, is not free from the extremes of existence and non-existence, because it exists, because it is the conventional truth, do you think? This is a contradictory pervasion, and the sign is not established at the root. If you accept, if the ultimate truth does not exist, if it exists, it is contradictory to the ultimate truth, one cannot say that either, because the ultimate truth exists. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
