And, all elaborations are prohibited, which is a non-diverse emptiness. Whichever of these two emptinesses, as long as a sign of emptiness appears in the concept, then, at the moment of cutting off the signless elaboration, it is regarded as an object to be negated. The reason for needing to negate when establishing this view is that it is a conventional truth. The second case is that conventional truth is regarded as ultimate truth, which has three ways: relying on the texts of the Prasangika school to establish it, relying on the texts of the Svatantrika school to establish it, and relying on the teachings of Shantideva to establish it. The first way, as it is said in the 'Sixty Stanzas on Reasoning': 'Those with right view do not cling to the world, nor do they cling to nirvana.' In the commentary, Chandrakirti asked: 'Is nirvana also a conventional truth?' The answer is: 'It is so. If there is discrimination in samsara, then there is also discrimination in nirvana. Because both of these are worldly expressions.' From there, 'Therefore, nirvana is also considered a conventional truth.' If someone says that nirvana is the ultimate truth, then, because it does not deceive the world, the worldly expression calls it the ultimate truth. Those who abide in seeing the ultimate truth do not perceive samsara or nirvana. Therefore, the statement 'Those with right view do not cling to the world, nor do they cling to nirvana' is established.' From there, 'If nirvana is nothing, then what does it mean that the noble ones attain nirvana?' The answer is: 'Knowing existence is called nirvana.' That is, knowing the nature of existence as unborn, fully understanding in a way that does not understand, that itself is the nature of the complete pacification of all signs, combined with conventional truth, it is called nirvana. Therefore, one should know that there is nothing established as the self-nature of what is called nirvana.' In this context, nirvana is a conventional truth in name, and it does not exist in our own system. The nirvana of that time must also be explained as both the nirvana of nature and the nirvana of the time of fruition, which can be understood from the context. The same example here is conventional. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The explanation of the true and the previous explanation of the ultimate truth are not contradictory. In the Bodhisattvacaryāvatāra-pañjikā, it says: 'What is the ultimate truth for ordinary people is the conventional truth of the noble ones (with appearances); and the ultimate truth of the noble ones is the conventional truth of the Buddhas.' Just as quoted in the Prajñā-hṛdaya-sūtra: 'What is the ultimate for others is considered the conventional for others.' Secondly, the Svātantrika school establishes emptiness as conventional truth in the following way: As stated in the Satyadvayavibhaṅga: 'The nature of what is imputed, if it is refuted, how can it not be imputed? Therefore, this is conventional.' And in the commentary to that, it says: 'If what is to be refuted is imputed, then the refutation itself will also become imputed, just like the refutation of the blueness, etc., of a barren woman's son.' Regarding the meaning here, later Tibetan scholars sometimes explain it as, for example, a sprout distinguished by the negation of arising; and sometimes they explain it from the perspective of becoming an object of conceptual grasping. Because it cannot be explained from its own perspective, it deviates far from the intention of the text. So, what is the intention of the text? The explanation is as follows: As stated in the scripture: 'Whatever arises merely dependent on things, should be known as the true conventional.' Therefore, merely arising itself is called the true conventional truth, and it is also the ultimate truth of the world. As stated in the scripture: 'What is not true is imputed.' Therefore, if the true arising, etc., becomes a false conventional truth due to the fabrication of a sect, then the negation of the true arising, etc., by reasoning such as the Vajracchedikā Prajñāpāramitā Sūtra will also become a false conventional truth, because it is fabricated by sectarian proponents. Regarding this doubt, the scripture says: 'The negation of arising, etc., also, because of the reasoning of negating things, is in accordance with the true, therefore, we consider it to be the ultimate.' If analyzed, it is merely conventional. Why? Because what is to be negated does not exist, therefore, in reality, the absence of negation is clear. 'The nature of what is imputed,' etc., are explained together. The meaning of these words is: If the sprout is taken as the basis for analysis, and relying on the reasoning of analysis, then the non-arising of the sprout is the ultimate truth; however, if the non-arising itself is taken as the basis for analysis, and relying on the reasoning of analysis, then the non-arising is the conventional truth. That is to say, both truth and conventional truth have a common basis. This is the ultimate truth relative to the former wisdom, and the conventional truth relative to the latter wisdom. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
