'Without arrogance.' As it is said, the noble teacher himself says in the Bodhicitta Commentary: 'Wherever conceptual appearances arise, how can there be emptiness? The Thus-gone Ones have not seen the aspects of the mind that thinks and is thought about. Wherever there is something to be examined and something that examines, there is no enlightenment.' And again in the same text: 'Unborn and emptiness, and selflessness, are said to be emptiness itself. Whoever meditates on a lower self-nature, that is not meditating on it.' And in the Praise Beyond the World: 'To abandon all thoughts, you taught the nectar of emptiness. Whoever clings to it, you severely criticize.' And in the Precious Garland: 'Thus, neither self nor selflessness are truly objects of focus. Therefore, the Great Sage refuted the views of self and selflessness.' And so on, extensively taught. As it is said: 'If one practices in the emptiness of form, one is practicing in signs.' And so on, spoken in connection with the state of omniscience. Kamalaśīla, in the Stages of Meditation, quotes a sutra: 'Light, for example, fire arises from rubbing two sticks together, and after arising, the fire burns the two sticks. Similarly, Light, if there is correct discrimination, the power of noble wisdom arises, and after it arises, it burns that very correct discrimination.' And in the Ornament for Clear Realization it is also said: 'The aggregates such as form are emptiness, the concept of practicing is a contradictory aspect.' Know that 'the basis of substance and imputation, clinging is also considered to be of two kinds.' Therefore, the thought that clings to the meaning established by the reasoning that establishes the emptiness of inherent existence is said to be the most supreme of the obscurations of knowledge, called the conceptualization of imputation. In those cases, because it is necessary to add the detail of 'clinging to truth,' if one takes it literally, it will become a great obstacle to the arising of the Madhyamaka view in the mindstream. It seems that someone is saying this. However, that statement is clearly refuted by the Lord in the Ornament for Clear Realization, as it is said: 'The distinction between ordinary beings and noble ones is that there are conceptualizations that grasp beings as substantial and imputed.' Therefore, the conceptualization of imputation is said to be the object of only noble ones. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

According to your view, if one clings to the truth that is merely nominally designated, then this mind will only become the support of the noble ones. But this is also unreasonable. Because a noble one who has not realized emptiness will not have the conceptual thought of clinging to designation at that time; and a noble one who has realized emptiness will cling to emptiness as true. So, which noble one, either a Hinayana noble one or a Mahayana noble one, clings in this way? If it is the former, it contradicts what you consider to be the obscuration of afflictions. If it is the latter, then this treatise is explaining the stages of seeing and abandoning, so it is not reasonable. Then, how should we explain what is said in the *Entering the Middle Way* (Madhyamakāvatāra): 'Therefore, the yogi who sees the emptiness of self and what belongs to self will be liberated.' and in the *Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life* (Bodhicaryāvatāra): 'A mind devoid of emptiness is easily stopped and reborn, like entering the absorption without perception. Therefore, emptiness should be cultivated.'? The answer is: there are similarities and there are realities. First, in the *Guhyasamāja Tantra* it says: 'Without object, there is no meditation; without meditation, there is no object; thus, object and non-object, without focus, is meditation.' and in the *Glorious Union Tantra* it says: 'One should not meditate on emptiness, one should not meditate on non-emptiness, the yogi does not abandon emptiness, nor does he abandon non-emptiness completely, clinging to emptiness and non-emptiness, conceptual thoughts increase, they do not decrease.' Therefore, one should not cultivate by clinging to emptiness and so on. Secondly, what is said in the *Entering the Middle Way* is the very reasoning for refuting self, and what is said in the *Entering the Bodhisattva's Way of Life* refers to the fact that a person who establishes freedom from elaboration does not meditate anywhere, and this is named as meditating on emptiness. The second part is the reasoning for refuting, including: identifying the emptiness to be refuted, clinging to it as true in the conventional truth, and explaining the reasoning for refuting its truth in the ultimate truth. First, in general, there are two usages of the word 'emptiness': emptiness that has not been established by reasoning, and emptiness that has been established by reasoning. The former is like a vase empty of water. The latter is also divided into: 'other-emptiness' (gzhan stong) which is empty based on otherness, such as being empty of what is imputed by conceptual thought, and 'self-emptiness' (rang stong) which is the emptiness of the self-nature of things like vases. Therefore, among these three, the first two are not the emptiness referred to here. And in the third case, only the emptiness that refutes the subtle elaborations of true existence is the emptiness in name. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
