The term 'gyas' can represent both the qualities of abandonment and realization with a single syllable. As stated in the second volume of the 'Treatise on Statements, Phonetics' composed by the great translators of the past: 'To awaken from the sleep of ignorance, and also to expand wisdom, awakening like a lotus into Buddhahood, therefore it is named Buddha.' Therefore, the single name 'Buddha' itself encompasses both awakening and expansion. Separating these two words and two meanings is not the true meaning of the letters. The second part is divided into two points: prostrating to Bodhisattvas and Śrāvakas. The first point is: prostration! To whom? To the Bodhisattvas, and also to the Śrāvakas. Why are Pratyekabuddhas not mentioned? Is it because they do not teach the Mahāyāna Dharma? Or as stated in the commentary on 'Śrāvakas Seeking Peace': 'Śrāvakas and those who align with them,' it can be explained as also including Pratyekabuddhas. Then, why do Pratyekabuddhas not teach, while Śrāvakas do? Because Pratyekabuddhas vow to become Buddhas themselves and do not aspire to complete enlightenment, they do not teach the Dharma for that purpose. The meaning of the term 'Śrāvaka' is 'one who hears and proclaims,' or 'one who hears and causes others to hear.' This is in terms of the method of attaining complete enlightenment, which is explained in detail in the 'Lotus Sutra' and other scriptures. They teach in this way because they are able to independently teach by the power of prajñā (wisdom) of emptiness, as clearly stated in the 'Prajñāpāramitā Sutra' and other scriptures. Although they encourage others to generate bodhicitta (the mind of enlightenment) for complete enlightenment, they do not bestow the Bodhisattva vows upon them, because they themselves do not have those vows. Then, how do they possess the wisdom of realizing emptiness? Even according to the view of Maitreya's 'Three Middle Treatises,' it must be acknowledged that they do not have direct realization, but they do have the realization of hearing and contemplation. Then, what is the difference in the qualities of these two? 'Having the eye of a sage' refers to Bodhisattvas, while 'having the divine eye' refers to Śrāvakas. As stated in the enumeration of the names of the Buddha: 'Samantabhadra, incomparable, great sage.' If the term 'sage' is interpreted broadly, it can also refer to non-Buddhist yogis. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Even all the way to becoming a Buddha. 'Having divine eye' means having clairvoyance, being able to benefit others. Specifically, with the divine eye, one can see the location of those to be tamed and the form of those to be tamed. Alternatively, both qualities can be applied to both objects. 'Sage' (Tibetan: དྲང་སྲོང་, Sanskrit Devanagari: ṛṣi, Sanskrit Romanization: rishi, literal Chinese meaning: immortal) indicates the manifestation of magical powers, as 'ṛṣi' appears to be the Sanskrit equivalent of both 'sage' and 'magical power'. In short, it refers to Bodhisattvas and Śrāvakas who are able to benefit others through the six clairvoyances. Second, to whom do I prostrate? To the mind of enlightenment (Bodhicitta). What is that? There are two ways to explain it: one is to apply it solely to the ultimate Bodhicitta, and the other is to also represent the conventional Bodhicitta. In the first case, there are generally two types of enlightenment: the ultimate Dharmakāya and the conventional Rūpakāya. With the intention and classification of generating the mind, it is also divided into two. The first footprint of generating the mind is to perfect the accumulation of wisdom, thereby leading to the enlightenment of the Dharmakāya; the second footprint is to perfect the accumulation of merit, thereby leading to the enlightenment of the Rūpakāya. Here, it refers to the first case, because it is now the time to explain the precious Dharma of the Mahāyāna, and it is also necessary to explain how to be free from attachment, and who is free from attachment. What are the qualities of that Bodhicitta? The distinction of abandonment is: 'It turns away from bad migrations', meaning it can abandon the seeds of non-virtue that cause birth there. The distinction of realization is: 'It clearly shows the path of liberation', meaning that by directly realizing the three selflessnesses, it can embrace all three types of individuals. If recited as 'the path of higher realms', then it clarifies the places of acceptance and rejection. The distinction of ability is: 'It leads to no aging and death', which means it has the power to lead directly or indirectly to the non-abiding Nirvāṇa. This is according to the previous explanation of 'the path of higher realms'. Here, 'no aging and death' refers only to the Nirvāṇa with remainder. According to the Yogācāra school, even from the inferior Nirvāṇa with remainder, one can establish no aging and death. According to the Madhyamaka school, even then it is not without it, because there is still the taking of a body due to the power of the seeds of ignorance. In the second case, the first two lines of the verse represent the qualities of the conventional Bodhicitta.
