Where? All sentient beings in the ten directions. When? Always. How? In a way that the body and mind are free from illness. Second, the thought of benefiting is: May it be harmonious. What is harmonious? It is the meaning of Dharma for all beings. Here, the meaning of harmony is explained in the commentary as being complete. Even so, may the meanings of the Dharma be in harmony with the thoughts of all beings. If explained in this way, the meaning is coherent and does not contradict the following. Moreover, may it be accomplished. What is accomplished? Not only are the thoughts of all beings in harmony with the Dharma, but also the hope for the Dharma that is in harmony with them. These wishes, represented by the aspiration for the swift arrival of the future Buddha, also include the vow to quickly attain Buddhahood oneself and to place sentient beings in benefit and happiness. Because of being governed by the Bodhicitta, it will not be forgotten. Second, not forgetting the Bodhicitta is divided into two: relying on the antidote and abandoning the opposing factors. First, among the four causes for not forgetting the Bodhicitta, the first is: Wherever I am born in the five realms of samsara, may I practice the supreme Bodhisattva conduct, and may I remember the Bodhicitta generated in previous lives. After remembering, what should be done? In all lifetimes, from birth to death, may I be ordained. How long? Not occasionally, but always. The commentary says: 'When practicing Bodhisattva conduct, always remember previous lives.' That is the meaning. Its literal meaning is: One should not generate the mind of enlightenment until one has attained enlightenment, because the Bodhicitta generated in this life may not be remembered in other lifetimes. Therefore, this first cause of not forgetting the Bodhicitta was proclaimed. The Compendium of Trainings says: 'In order to manifest the non-confused aspiration, there is no fault.' This is in accordance with it. In short, by generating the mind of enlightenment there, one must aspire to remember previous lives, and from remembering that, learning its precepts will naturally arise. The second cause is: After being ordained, what should be done? Follow all the Buddhas and perfect the conduct of the Bodhisattvas. Here, 'Excellent' refers to Samantabhadra, who is not only the eldest son of the Buddha, but also the general name for Bodhisattvas, as stated in the Tantras. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The Lama said: 'Kuntuzangpo (Samantabhadra, the All-Good) is unparalleled, a great upright one.' Thus it is said. How to perfect it? 'May my conduct of discipline be immaculate and completely pure, may I always practice without loss or fault.' This explains the four distinctions of a Bodhisattva's discipline. That is: not mixed with afflictions, hence immaculate; free from the taint of generating a Hinayana (inferior vehicle) mind, hence completely pure; free from the misconduct of body and speech, hence without loss; without hope for fruition, hence without fault. The third cause is: having become ordained and kept the precepts in all lifetimes, what should one do? May I, with sounds that accord with the ears of all beings and match their thoughts, teach the sacred Dharma to all beings, and become a teacher. What is that? To the gods in the language of the gods, to the nagas (serpent deities) in their language, and to the pretas (hungry ghosts) and humans in their respective languages. The word 'and,' as if introducing what follows, means that for beings not included in the above, I will speak in their respective languages. The fourth cause is: the mindstream is gentle and pliable, and one diligently practices the ten perfections (Paramita, pāramitā), that is, joy. In this way, with these four causes, may the Bodhicitta (mind of enlightenment) never be forgotten.' This is the conclusion. Second, eliminating unfavorable factors: such as the four defeats (pham pa, root downfalls), the nineteen root downfalls, and the four black dharmas, etc., whatever sins obscure the manifestation of Bodhicitta, may the seeds of all those sins in my own mindstream be completely purified. By what cause? By the cause of 'diligently practicing the perfections.' Second, regarding the application, there are two parts: first, aspiring to how to be liberated from the bonds of karma and afflictions and take birth in samsara; second, aspiring to how to benefit sentient beings after taking birth. The first is: Thus, how does a Bodhisattva who has initially generated the mind of enlightenment benefit sentient beings? Like that, having entered the conduct of a Bodhisattva, one also takes birth among the five types of beings in the world realm. How so? There are two examples: without attachment and without obstruction. The first is: Just as a lotus, although it grows in water, is not stained by the water. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
