Great Scholar Shakya Chokden's Instructions skc37, 'Extensive Commentary on the King of Aspiration Prayers of Noble Samantabhadra: Entrance to the Ocean of Faith' 'Extensive Commentary on the King of Aspiration Prayers of Noble Samantabhadra: Entrance to the Ocean of Faith' Homage and Pledge to Compose Namaḥ Samantabhadrāya Homage to Samantabhadra). 'Extensive Commentary on the King of Aspiration Prayers of Noble Samantabhadra: Entrance to the Ocean of Faith'. Adorned with flawless white aspiration jewels, On the wondrous lap of the six perfections' treasure mountain, The Great Sage Vairochana, the great ocean of the snowy land, The treasure of all desires, is the place of your hand. The immeasurable aspirations of the Buddhas' sons, The aspiration of Samantabhadra, skilled at gathering, Is spoken here and now by the supreme compassionate teacher, This commentary is for the benefit of those who contradict it. Thus, having first paid homage and pledged to compose, there are three points to explain this 'King of Aspiration Prayers of Noble Samantabhadra': the purpose, the summary, and the meaning of the words. The Purpose The first has three parts: From which sutra does this aspiration prayer come? Who was the first person to make this aspiration prayer? For whom was it made? Why was it made? When was this aspiration prayer made? First, it comes from the bodhisattva section of the canon, from the great Dharma category called 'Adorned with Trees', from the chapter on 'The Practice of Honoring the Virtuous Friend' by Norzang. Second, the world is also called 'The World Adorned with the Root and Heart Flowers', and also called 'The Dense Array Pure Land'. The support for the collection of all the Buddhas' Dharmakaya into one is the Sambhogakaya, which is called Vairochana, the great ocean of the snowy land. The son who arose from his heart is the one widely known as Samantabhadra, the eldest of all the Buddhas' sons. That Buddha's son made that aspiration prayer in that very place, and our teacher placed it in the very extensive canon. However, the beginning and end of this aspiration prayer are not to be found, because the Dense Array Pure Land, together with its support and supported, are all the result of the power of this aspiration prayer. As it is said: As much as afflictions and actions --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Therefore, he said, 'My aspiration is only this much.' The beings to be specifically tamed are like the merchant's son Norzang (Wealthy and Excellent), those who wish to quickly perfect the great conduct of the Bodhisattva and manifest the deeds of the perfectly enlightened Buddha. The necessity is: in order to purify the impure realms and fully hold the adorned realms; in order to manifest the body of complete fruition, named 'Vairochana, the Snowy Mountain Sea', which perfects the accumulation of merit. These meanings also come from the Avataṃsaka Sūtra itself. As it says: The merchant's son Norzang relied on Maitreya (བྱམས་པ་,梵文:Maitreya) and Mañjuśrī (འཇམ་དཔལ་,梵文:Mañjuśrī) and one hundred and eight other spiritual friends, and after learning the great conduct of the Bodhisattva, through their power and blessings, in the world realm adorned with roots and heart, flowers, in the presence of the Thus-Gone-One Vairochana (རྣམ་པར་སྣང་མཛད,梵文:Vairocana), he saw the son of the Victorious Ones, Samantabhadra, sitting on a lion throne with a lotus heart, with inconceivable miracles and liberation. Similarly, in each of the ten directions, in the presence of all the Thus-Gone-Ones of the realms equal to the number of extremely fine dust particles of all the Buddha-fields, he saw Samantabhadra with inconceivable liberation, seated on a lion throne. At that time, all those Samantabhadras stretched out their right hands like elephant trunks and placed them on the crown of Norzang's head, and it is said that they uttered this 'King of Aspiration Prayers' in the form of verses. Third, the time when it was uttered was: when our teacher Shakyamuni Buddha was residing in Jeta Grove (ཛེ་ཏའི་ཚལ,梵文:Jetavana), the youth Mañjuśrī came out of that grove and traveled to the south, and finally when he was residing in the great city called 'Source of Joy', the merchant's son Norzang, along with five hundred attendants, arrived there and followed after Mañjuśrī. At that time, Mañjuśrī said to Norzang, 'It is good that you have generated the mind of unsurpassed Bodhi and wish to perfect the path of the Bodhisattva. Therefore, rely on spiritual friends and do not be weary of serving and honoring them.' He said, 'How does one practice the mind of Bodhi?' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
