‘The departed’ and other four Shlokas. The sixteenth, ‘Actions are pure’ and other one Shloka. Thus, this explanation of the sixteen divisions of aspiration is the tradition of explanation of most commentators such as Dignāga and Dharmakīrti. Second, the summarized meaning has two: the end and benefits of this aspiration. First is: ‘Until the end of the sky’ and other four lines. Secondly, there are three: the benefits of this life and future lives, and the combined benefits of both. First, there are four: the benefit of accumulating great merit, the benefit of seeing the Tathāgata, the benefit of sharing fortune with Bodhisattvas, and the benefit of purifying karmic obscurations. First is: ‘Whatever directions of the ten directions’ and other two Shlokas. Second is: ‘By whatever good deeds’ and other four lines. Third is: ‘Those attainments’ and other four lines. Fourth is: ‘Uninterrupted’ and other four lines. Second, the benefits of future lives have two: summarized by cause and summarized by result. First is: ‘Wisdom and’ and other four lines. Second is: ‘Under the Bodhi tree’ and other four lines. Third, the combination of the benefits of both is: ‘Whatever good deeds’ and other four lines. Second, there are five dedications of the merit of manifesting this aspiration: dedicating as the sons of the Buddhas know, dedicating as the Buddhas know, dedicating as the cause to see Amitābha, dedicating as the cause to be prophesied to attain Anuttarā-samyak-saṃbodhi, and dedicating as the cause to benefit sentient beings. First is: ‘Mañjuśrī’ and other four lines. Second is: ‘Three times departed’ and other four lines. Third is: ‘When I do the time of death’ and other two Shlokas. Fourth is: ‘Mandala of the Buddhas’ and other four lines. Fifth is: ‘There I’ and other four lines. For the time being, the necessity and the summarized meaning are just that much. Meaning of words, meaning of the name. Third, explaining the meaning of words has three: the meaning of the name, the honorifics of translation, the meaning of the text. First, there are two: translating the name and explaining. First is: In Sanskrit, ‘Ārya’ is ‘འཕགས་པ’ (phags pa, noble) in Tibetan. ‘Bhadra’ is ‘བཟང་པོ’ (bzang po, good). ‘Carya’ is ‘སྤྱོད་པ’ (spyod pa, conduct). ‘Praṇidhāna’ is ‘སྨོན་ལམ’ (smon lam, aspiration). ‘Rāja’ is ‘རྒྱལ་པོ’ (rgyal po, king). Second is: Because it is far beyond the realm of ordinary beings, it is ‘noble’. ‘Good’ refers to ‘Samantabhadra’.

The so-called 'attaining freedom' refers to the 'excellent conduct'. Regarding this meaning, the *Avataṃsaka Sūtra* states: 'Oh, sons of the Victorious Ones, these ten are the ten dharmas practiced by the Bodhisattva Samantabhadra. What are these ten? The aspiration to abide in all future kalpas is the dharma he practices; making offerings and serving all future Tathāgatas is his dharma; establishing all sentient beings in the practice of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra is his dharma; the aspiration to perfectly accumulate all roots of virtue is his dharma; the aspiration to enter all pāramitās is his dharma; the aspiration to perfect all Bodhisattva practices is his dharma; the aspiration to adorn all realms of the world is his dharma; the aspiration to fully embrace rebirth in all Buddha-fields is his dharma; the aspiration to be skilled in completely understanding all dharmas and differentiating fields is his dharma; the aspiration to manifestly attain complete enlightenment in all Buddha-fields is his dharma.' If one aspires with these dharmas, then his practice will be perfected.' The mention of 'sixth' here is due to syntactical necessity, to facilitate the connection of 'sixth' with the following content. The term 'aspiration' refers to seeking a future object, along with the intention and corresponding mental state to manifest it. As stated in the *Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṃkāra*: 'The aspiration of the steadfast is with intention and desire.' The term 'king' is analogous to how the dominion of a Cakravartin (wheel-turning king) encompasses the rule of many smaller kingdoms; similarly, within this aspiration are gathered countless aspirations, including the ten great aspirations, thus it is the chief among all aspirations. Here, what is the difference between dedication and aspiration? Aspiration is general, while dedication is specific. Dedication necessarily requires an object to be dedicated, whereas aspiration can be with or without an object; the key is the desire to obtain the desired. Its essence is intention, and the corresponding mind that arises from it also causes the mind to move towards that particular object. Nevertheless, this King of Aspirations of Samantabhadra is indeed a dedication, as it says: 'Whatever small virtue I have accumulated, all of it is for the sake of perfect enlightenment.' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
