Being captivated by it, first, generate the mind of Bodhicitta (enlightenment mind); in the middle, learn the conduct; and finally, aspire to abide in the state of Buddhahood.’ This is stated in the commentary. In the Avatamsaka Sutra (Flower Garland Sutra), it says: ‘In each of the world realms that are beyond the number of fine dust particles of the sands of the Ganges River of Buddha-fields, there are as many Tathagatas (Buddhas) residing, and in front of all those Tathagatas, there is the noble Manjushri (gentle glory) residing individually, aspiring to accomplish the activities.’ This explains that. How long does that aspiration last? ‘Until all future kalpas (aeons).’ With what kind of mind? ‘Without discouragement.’ How is the manner? ‘I will completely fulfill all the desired aspiration activities.’ Aspiring to perfect the qualities of the Buddha: Second, aspiring to the state of Buddhahood, which is aspiring to be equal to the Buddha in terms of conduct, qualities, abode, and power. In order, conduct is not limited like that of Shravakas (listeners), Pratyekabuddhas (solitary realizers), and Bodhisattvas, but becomes the actual Buddha. Qualities are not measurable like those, but may they become the immeasurable Buddha. Abiding in those immeasurable conducts, may I realize all the manifestations of the magical displays of those perfectly enlightened Buddhas, i.e., fully comprehend them. Concluding by showing the extent and benefits of the aspiration: Second, concluding by showing the extent and benefits, which has two aspects: showing the extent of how long this aspiration lasts, and the benefits of having faith in this aspiration. Showing the extent of how long this aspiration lasts: First, if these aspirations are made until one's own Bodhisattva conduct is completely perfected, or until one becomes a Buddha, that is not the case. Rather, as long as sentient beings and space are not exhausted, the extent of this aspiration also lasts until then.’ This explains that this aspiration is not exhausted when the aspirer themselves become a Buddha, like the Shravakas and Pratyekabuddhas who have completely passed away. Rather, as much as karma and afflictions are exhausted, the extent of my aspiration also remains. How much are karma and afflictions exhausted? How much are karma and afflictions exhausted? As much as sentient beings are exhausted, that is how much they are exhausted. How much is their exhaustion? Just like space is ultimately exhausted, similarly, the exhaustion of all sentient beings is the same. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The benefits of faith in that path: An extensive explanation of the benefits of faith in this aspiration. The second part is benefits, which are divided into two parts: an extensive explanation of the benefits of faith in this aspiration; and a summarized presentation of the benefits of faith in it. The first part is divided into two parts: the benefits in this life and the benefits in future lives. The first part has four aspects: accumulating extraordinary merit; seeing the Tathāgata; obtaining the good fortune to be in harmony with the Bodhisattvas; and purifying karmic obscurations. The first aspect is: 'This will become the supreme of excellent merit.' This sentence is: first, the word 'this' merely indicates the meaning, it is the basis of the explanation. Second, by what action does it become so? Merely generating faith in this aspiration even once, one obtains the corresponding merit. Here, the meaning of faith is: seeing its qualities, thereby becoming inseparable from it. Third, by whose action does that merit become supreme? Whoever, having heard this King of Aspiration, rejoices and reveres it in accordance with the supreme Bodhi, that is, perfect Bodhi. Fourth, the purpose is: to be in accordance with the supreme Bodhi. Fifth, the source is: from what does it surpass? From all the boundless ocean of realms in the ten directions, adorned with priceless jewels, and whatever merit there is from offering to the Buddhas; moreover, from the merit of offering objects of supreme bliss of gods and humans, as many as the dust particles in the fields, for as many kalpas. Sixth, the connecting words are: 'gods and humans,' and 'of the field,' etc., are all connecting words. The second part includes: abandoning the lower realms; abandoning bad friends; because of this reason, meeting virtuous friends; and the benefit of seeing Amitābha at the time of death. The third part is: in order, 'Therefore, he will abandon all the lower realms'; 'Therefore, he has abandoned bad friends'; and 'He will quickly see Amitābha.' What is the cause? 'Because he has recited this Aspiration of Samantabhadra.' To this, add the three lines 'Whoever, having heard this King of Aspiration,' etc. The third part includes: the benefit of obtaining what is desired; the benefit of living in happiness; the benefit of making human life meaningful; and the benefit of quickly becoming like Samantabhadra. In order, 'They will obtain supreme achievements'; 'Even in this life, they will be very successful'; and 'Samantabhadra' --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
