Even the knowledge of the past, even if it cannot be established by other pramanas (means of valid cognition), it is still known by itself. Because through it, the knowledge of oneself, subsequently arises the memory that focuses on the object. ' They say so. To this, the Madhyamikas say, 'If it is not established, then it cannot be known through it, just like the son of a barren woman. Memory also cannot be a reason, because in conventional truth, memory also arises for objects, but in ultimate truth, memory is impossible. ' They explain it this way. In general, the reasoning that establishes mind-only as without inherent existence is: things. Third, establishing mind-only as without inherent existence includes: the actual and the refutation of debate. The first part is establishing it there by the reason of being merely a name; establishing it there by the reason of not being found when searched for; establishing it there by the reason of not being established even in shapes, etc.; and the summary of all meanings. First, mind, as the subject of debate, is merely a name, there is nothing other than a name. Second, mind and mental factors are explained as the collection of names. So, is it true only in name? The name of viewing as mind-only, as the subject of debate, is also without inherent existence, because it is a completely imputed phenomenon. Third, mind, as the subject of debate, is empty of its own essence, because it does not exist in the distinctions of color and shape, nor in the grasper and the grasped, nor in the essence of male, female, or hermaphrodite. To this, others say: 'Is that sharp and long horn on the head of a donkey or on the head of a horse?' That wisdom of thinking becomes the wisdom of thinking about the condition of the horn, because the wisdom of thinking about where shape and color are is the wisdom of thinking about the condition of the mind.' They say this, which contradicts the text just mentioned, and is also unreasonable in intellect. First, according to your view, even if it is not on either of those two, it exists on the head of a buffalo.' You might think so. Then, the intellect that thinks about whether it exists in a true single or multiple will also become not that, because even if it is not there, it exists on the head of a buffalo. Second, mind does not exist in shape and color, etc., in conventional truth.' You might think so. If so, then the thinking that thinks about whether mind exists in a true single or multiple will also become not that, because you do not accept that it exists in that and that in conventional truth. Fourth, in short, mind, as the subject of debate, is the nature of being without inherent existence, The Buddhas have not seen in the time when you have transcended inherent existence. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because it is free from becoming a path of expression through words. Then, who knows it there? Those who dwell in the heart of Bodhi (byang chub kyi snying po), the great beings who abide equally in the Dharma-nature, the noble sons of the Buddhas who are close to the Buddhas, in the three times, always know emptiness (stong pa nyid) as being like the sky. Then, how is emptiness cultivated with the wisdom of walking? Secondly, regarding how to cultivate emptiness in this way, there are two aspects: the way of cultivating according to the Madhyamaka-Svatantrika (dbu ma rang lugs), and the unreasonableness of the Yogacara (rnal 'byor spyod pa) way of cultivating emptiness. The first part includes: showing that emptiness must be cultivated, and how to cultivate it. First, emptiness is free from elaboration (spros pa), its nature is peaceful, and it functions like an illusion, so this emptiness of emptiness should always be cultivated. The purpose of cultivation is to destroy samsara (srid pa 'khor ba). Is it destroying what already exists? No, it is destroying the samsara without a foundation. Then, isn't the appearance of various good and bad realms contradictory? It is not contradictory, because emptiness is the basis of all conventional (kun rdzob) dharmas. Or explain it this way: the basis of all conventional dharmas, its nature is peaceful, and it appears like a rootless illusion, so in order to destroy samsara, emptiness should always, that is, necessarily, be cultivated. The second part includes: refuting the confusion about the non-cultivation of emptiness, and explaining the correct way of cultivating it. First, whatever is cultivated by making 'unborn,' 'emptiness,' and 'selflessness' the objects of grasping, that is not an effective way to cultivate emptiness, because it is only cultivating the inferior aspect of emptiness. Although this cultivation is helpful in counteracting the belief in inherent existence (bden 'dzin), it strongly generates the belief in non-inherent existence. This means that it has become a conceptual meditation of imputation. Secondly, then how should one cultivate? As long as conceptual thoughts (rtog pa) have not been eliminated, an effective way of cultivating emptiness will not arise, because the Buddhas have said that the characteristic of 끊ing the continuum of good and non-good conceptual thoughts is the true cultivation, and they do not accept those objects grasped by conceptual thoughts as emptiness. Then how should one cultivate? The emptiness that has been established through hearing and thinking, cultivating emptiness in meditative equipoise (mnyam bzhag), is like cultivating the sky. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
