Some assert that the earth is real, but here, it cannot be realized without a body, so both exist together nominally. Thus, the Mind-Only school believes that upon the consciousness that serves as the basis for the growth of habits, there are two aspects: the defiled aspect and the undefiled wisdom aspect. The first, they acknowledge as the Alaya-vijñana (kun gzhi,梵文:ālaya-vijñāna,梵文罗马转写:ālaya-vijñāna,meaning: storehouse consciousness) and indeterminate. The second, they do not acknowledge as the Alaya-vijñana, but rather as the naturally existing lineage, the Tathāgatagarbha (bde bar gshegs pa'i snying po,梵文:tathāgatagarbha,梵文罗马转写:tathāgatagarbha, meaning: the womb of the Thus-Gone One), and undefiled virtue. The Madhyamaka school, however, believes that the first part just mentioned can be acknowledged as the Alaya-vijñana, but does not acknowledge that there is such a name. The second part, the luminous part, is called the Alaya-vijñana and the Tathāgatagarbha. Although it is not the basis of all food as the Mind-Only school believes, it follows the nature of all things, so it is called 'that'. Thus, in this school, everything is characterized by 'that', so the 'consciousness' of the Dharma is not a thing, because it does not possess the characteristic of 'that'. Therefore, Madhyamaka and Mind-Only differ in their recognition of the Alaya-vijñana, but if one grasps a basis and does not understand to distinguish from the perspective of whether or not to acknowledge true establishment, it is because in the ultimate conclusion of the Yogacara school, there is no acknowledgment that consciousness is truly established. So, if one explains its conclusion, as it is said: 'Consciousness that is liberated from the apprehended and the apprehender is the ultimate truth.' Is it not said so? It is said so because that school does not want it itself to be empty, just as in the *Entering the Middle Way*, it explains the assertion of others that self-nature exists. Then, is it not contradictory to acknowledge self-nature existence and to acknowledge emptiness of true existence? For that school, it is not contradictory, because the meaning of emptiness is mainly explained as other-emptiness. Although that school acknowledges that the imputed is empty of self-nature, that is not a thorough emptiness, just as a widow's son is empty of himself. Therefore, for that school, the only truly established thing is the perfectly established. Its basis is also called the wisdom of non-duality of the apprehended and the apprehender, and it is also the basis for the Madhyamaka and Mind-Only schools to argue about whether it truly exists. If one says: 'The wisdom that is liberated from the apprehended and the apprehender is the ultimate truth,' then there is no mistake. The knower that it exists by its own nature is also experienced through the wisdom of self-awareness. It is explained thus. Non-dual wisdom is... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Refuting the denial of emptiness by self-nature: Second, to prove that wisdom itself is empty, there are two points: one is that there is no evidence to prove that it is non-empty, and the other is that there are reasons to refute it. The first point is: 'If there is no basis of the body, then the consciousness that depends on it does not exist either.' When this is fully understood and established, the Yogacara school believes that the self-cognizant wisdom, the knowledge of the inseparability of the knower and the known, exists by its own nature. So, please tell me what this is like? Because it is impossible to present evidence to prove it, because without an object of perception, the perceiving consciousness will not arise. Yogacarins cannot explain to Madhyamikas how non-dual wisdom exists, because they say that self-cognizant wisdom itself is the knower, which means that the known is a real thing, and it is impossible to express 'this is it' in words. Because your pervasion (khyab) has been established in your mind, in order to make the opponent as convinced as yourself, the wise always use unambiguous words without hesitation, and are able to express what they want to express truthfully, because this is the way to enter the path of language. So, doesn't the Madhyamika also say 'unspeakable, unthinkable,' and 'self-cognizant wisdom is the object of practice'? Answer: In this school, self-cognizance is only the naming of wisdom without an object of experience, not the belief that the object of experience is a real thing. The second point is: if it is admitted that without parikalpita, consciousness can continue to exist, it is unreasonable, because consciousness knows the known, and the two depend on each other for existence. If there is no object of perception, consciousness will not arise, then it is unreasonable to think that non-dual wisdom is self-cognizant, because without an object of perception, there is no knower and known. If you say that we have the same problem, then, conventionally, because there is an object of perception, consciousness can continue to exist, and we also admit the self-cognizance of experiencing it, but in the ultimate truth, we do not admit these three. Therefore, it is inappropriate to call it non-dual wisdom. The Vijnanavada school believes that dualistic consciousness is empty, because it is empty of the grasper and the grasped, but it is not empty of self-nature, because its self-nature is not empty, so dualistic consciousness exists by its own nature, and its way of recognition is called having three special features. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
