It is the reasoning about forms, and the example of dreams, which, although meaningless, give rise to meaningful awareness. First, for the argument that there is meaning, its pervasiveness is uncertain, because even those who consider external things to be singular will have awareness of different forms appearing. The example of its proof is: the form that is considered pleasing is seen to appear as other; the form itself is seen to appear as other to others; the taste of food that is considered to be without disease is universal, and yogis, those with attachment, and dogs will respectively regard it as the three forms of corpses, desires, and food. These refute the view of the Vaibhashikas who hold that things have no forms. Secondly, this is similar to the existence of external things, but it is not a factor in generating manifest awareness, just as the awareness of dreams has no benefit or harm. Otherwise, the awareness of dreams would have manifest things existing, because there is no difference between the awareness of dreams and the waking state in terms of things appearing, and the arising of appearances depends on things. This refutes the Sautrantikas who hold that there are other causes that generate forms. In short, there are no external things apart from consciousness, because the nature of the appearance of both the grasped and the grasper is false. Whatever appears in consciousness is clung to as the thing itself. Therefore, the nature of things does not actually exist, but various cognitions appear as different forms, sounds, etc. These forms, etc., appear and are clung to in subsequent conceptualizations. The example of proof is: just as people with deluded minds see illusory horses, mirage water, and gandharva cities, etc., which do not exist, so too do forms, sounds, etc., appear even though they do not exist. Second, arguing for the non-truth of wisdom is divided into two parts: explaining the order of entering into the two selflessnesses, and directly arguing for the non-truth of wisdom. First, as stated above, external things do not exist, and the things that appear are forms of the mind, then this contradicts the aggregates, etc., mentioned in the Abhidharma, and is it possible to accept that the forms themselves are the mind? The answer is threefold: three are spoken to counteract the clinging to self, and to dispel the fear of annihilation, it is only mind. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

All appearances that are spoken of are proofs that it is only mind (Cittamātra). The first point is that this is not contradictory, because in order to prevent people from clinging to the existence of a self, the Abhidharma explains the classification of aggregates, elements, etc. And those Mahayana practitioners with great faculties, while temporarily abiding in the state of mind-only, also abandon the classification of aggregates, etc., which are common to the Śrāvakayāna. Then, are those Mahayana practitioners who are in that state only Madhyamikas? It is not so. The Vijñānavādins and Sautrāntikas also believe that the various appearances are formed in the mind. The second point is that the ultimate appearance is not explained as only mind, but through the introduction 'What is the nature of consciousness? Now it should be explained,' and then saying 'All these three realms are only mind,' what the Buddha did was to dispel the fear of children, not to describe reality as it is. The third point is divided into two parts: the common reasoning of the false aspectarians and the uncommon scriptural authority of the Mahayana. The first point is that the appearance itself is not truly in the mind, because the division into the three—the completely imputed (parikalpita), the dependent (paratantra), and the thoroughly established (parinispanna)—is a wisdom discrimination of the sole essence of emptiness, the self-luminous mind. The meaning of the words is: in the emptiness of the apprehended and the apprehender, the one consciousness is divided into three dharmas, and when the illusory dependent is established as empty of the apprehended and the apprehender, the thoroughly established is the only one, and the dependent does not exist as a real entity. As it is said in the Ornament of the Sutras: 'Having realized that there is nothing other than the mind, then one realizes that the mind itself does not exist.' Having explained it in this way, the false aspectarians of the Yogācāra should not be called mind-only, because they do not accept that appearances exist in the mind. They are called consciousness-only, because they accept that the essence of the thoroughly established is knowable, and they do not accept the dependent entity that is separate from it. The second point is that for those who delight in the Great Vehicle and have the lineage of the Madhyamikas, the Buddha summarized and taught the equality of non-self in phenomena. How did he teach it? In the Condensed Perfection of Wisdom Sutra, it says: 'On the mind, there is no mind, the nature of the mind is luminosity,' meaning that the mind is unborn from the beginning. Here, the mind without true existence, which is accepted by the false aspectarians, is definitely only other-empty (gzhan stong), and therefore it is different from this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
