For the sake of correction, and also in the sutra called 'Vow Mudra,' the ritual for taking this vow is clearly explained. Nevertheless, what is said here is according to the tantric view, understanding through conventional imagery, regarding the images of the moon and vajra as the essence of two minds. This is explained because the term 'Bodhisattva' indicates someone in the world who has already generated the conventional bodhicitta. The phrases 'door of tantra,' etc., explain how to take the ultimate bodhicitta as it arises from the tantras. So, is it that simply by taking the ritual, it arises in the continuum? It is not so; it must be generated by the power of practice. The phrases 'ultimate,' etc., are the explanation of this. Therefore, it is necessary to distinguish the difference that ultimate bodhicitta has a ritual, but it cannot be generated merely through the ritual. As the Sakya master said: 'The so-called ultimate bodhicitta is generated by the power of practice, but it is not generated through ritual.' And, 'For this, there are no three rituals of preliminary, main part, and conclusion, which were not spoken by the Buddhas.' As these words say. Among them, not explaining the rituals of the main part and conclusion is the main feature of the Twenty Verses. The ritual just mentioned is considered to be the ritual of taking only through the vow of ultimate bodhicitta. As it is said: 'Even if it is spoken to a hundred people, it is only a vow, not a ritual.' For example, saying 'I will give alms.' Second, establishing the nature of the mind, divided into three parts: praising and promising to compose a treatise, explaining the nature of the mind and explaining that it must be practiced, and through such practice, samsara is destroyed, and the benefit of manifesting non-abiding nirvana. First is praising and promising to compose a treatise. The first part is prostration. Who is the object of prostration? It is the one who holds the precious vajra. What is its nature? It is the nature of ultimate bodhi. Although this exists in all stages of the base, path, and fruition, the three bodies (Trikaya) are not complete in the first two stages, therefore, the characteristic is only that of the fruition stage. After doing this, one begins to explain. Who will explain? It is I, the author of the treatise. Where to explain? In the place of how to practice the ultimate bodhicitta. What is the function of practicing it? It is the destruction of existence. Here, there are two kinds of 'existence': the existence of karma and afflictions, and the ground of ignorance and habitual tendencies. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Thus, the first verse reveals the subject matter of this treatise, and the first half of the second verse reveals the purpose, while the relationship between the purpose and the subject matter is implicitly expressed. Next, after explaining its nature, it is shown that it must be cultivated. The second part is divided into two points: revelation and explanation. The first point is further divided into two: identifying the Bodhicitta, and showing that it is the object to be cultivated. The first point is: The Buddhas approve. In what way? The Buddhas promise to realize the ultimate Bodhicitta, which is not obscured by sudden thoughts, and is always pure in nature, possessing the characteristic of emptiness. What are the thoughts? It is the consciousness that clings to self and aggregates as phenomena. The second point is: Bodhisattvas with hearts moistened by compassion should diligently cultivate the ultimate Bodhicitta that arises through aspiration. Because the Buddhas, who possess great compassion, always diligently cultivate the ultimate Bodhicitta, thereby realizing the fruit of non-abiding Nirvana. The second part, explanation, is divided into three points: how Bodhicitta is empty in itself, how emptiness is cultivated by the wisdom that cultivates, and how through such cultivation one is liberated from the extremes of permanence and annihilation. How Bodhicitta is empty in itself. The first point is: The 'self' imagined by non-Buddhists, if analyzed through reason, cannot be found in any of the aggregates. How to analyze? Only on top of the aggregates of appropriation, there is only the name of aggregates, but it is not the nature of 'self', because it is not permanent. This refutes the view that 'self' and aggregates are the same entity. If they are not the same entity, but exist as different entities, support and supported, that is also impossible. Because in any school of thought, permanence and impermanence cannot be recognized as things that support and are supported. Refuting 'self': The basis of attributes is unreasonable, and even if it is reasonable, it cannot be the agent. The second part is divided into two points: the basis of attributes is unreasonable, and even if it is reasonable, it cannot be the agent. The first point is: If 'self' does not exist, then the agent is unreasonable. If the 'self' as the basis does not exist, then how can the agent as the attribute be conceived? Because in the world, only when things exist can their attributes be analyzed, otherwise it is impossible. The second point is: The function is unreasonable. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
