Therefore, this absence of inherent existence is not the dharmas, but the meaning of self-emptiness. If impermanent dharmas are established as self-empty, then are permanent dharmas not established as such? According to the treatises of the Madhyamaka school, the ultimate nature of all dharmas is considered to be emptiness. How then is the conventional ultimate truth established? Just as the nature of molasses is established as sweetness, and the nature of fire as heat. However, according to worldly convention, heat has three special characteristics that depend on fire; while according to the treatises of the Madhyamaka school, fire is empty of heat, which is the three special characteristics of fire. The three special characteristics are: As it is said, 'Inherent existence is uncreated, not dependent on others, and the change of inherent existence is never reasonable.' Therefore, through familiarity, one can be liberated from the extremes of permanence and annihilation. Third, if one knows self-emptiness, one is liberated from the extremes of permanence and annihilation. This is divided into the actual statement and the refutation of objections. First, for the school that explains all dharmas as self-empty, there is no fault of speaking of annihilation. This is because if one accepts that a dharma established by valid cognition is self-empty, then that would be the case. But what is being said now is that emptiness, which has never existed, is being proclaimed as the nature of all dharmas. Similarly, this is not a statement of permanence, because self-emptiness is being spoken of as the nature of all knowable things. Second, it is divided into two parts: first, showing that accepting self-emptiness does not lead to the fault of the interruption of conventional reality; and second, showing that accepting conventional reality does not lead to the fault of needing to seek emptiness separately. First, if all dharmas are empty of their own essence, then there would be no agent or experiencer of results, and the sprouting of a sprout from a seed, and the generation of wisdom from hearing the scriptures, etc., would not occur. The answer is, how the dependent arising of persons and dharmas is accepted, and therefore one is liberated from the fault of interrupting conventional reality. This is divided into two parts: first, the way of establishing the dependent arising of persons; and second, the dependent arising of dharmas. First, there is the teaching, the explanation, and the summary. First is the teaching: there is no fault, starting from ignorance and ending with old age and death, the activities that arise in dependence on the twelve links. The author of the treatise considers these to appear as the nature of consciousness, like dreams and illusions, and not as the nature of wisdom. Second, it is divided into two parts: in the confused appearance... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

It shows that there is dependent origination. It shows that it does not exist in the face of wisdom. The first point is: as long as ignorance with afflictions is not abandoned, this cycle of twelve links of dependent origination will appear to be revolving on the path of samsara. Because no sentient being wants to enjoy the fruits of karma in samsara and enter the state of peaceful nirvana. The second point is: scholars believe that the aggregates (Sanskrit: skandha, the five elements that make up the body and mind of sentient beings) are the link between the past and future lives, and the aggregates themselves will continue to be born and transformed in other worlds. This is a definite truth. On the level of conventional truth (Sanskrit: saṁvṛti-satya, relative truth), the Buddha proclaimed and established the saying 'the enjoyer of karmic results', which is a illusory expression. However, on the level of ultimate truth (Sanskrit: paramārtha-satya, absolute truth), the nature of all dharmas (Sanskrit: dharma, all things and phenomena in the universe) is emptiness. Just like from the practitioner to the one who experiences the karmic results, the nature of all conventional truths is emptiness, and it will be transformed into the nature of consciousness (Sanskrit: vijñāna, the function of recognition). [A summary meaning is omitted here.] Second, regarding how to establish external dependent origination: briefly explain the similarities with illusions; elaborate on the principle of appearance without self-nature; determine the truth through conventional truth and summarize the main points. The first point is: just like the internal dependent origination mentioned above, external dependent origination is also considered to be similar to dreams and illusions. For example, the sound of a drum and the sprouts of the sala tree are all produced by the aggregation of their respective causes and conditions. Since the nature of these aggregates is emptiness, it is easy for even realists to understand. The second point is: just as relying on a mirror, the image of the face can appear, the image is not produced from the mirror, and if there is no face, the image will not appear in the mirror, the external dependent origination is the same. The third point is: in short, from the practitioner to the karmic results, in conventional truth, the production of results from causes will never be contradictory. Because when establishing the truth of names (Sanskrit: vyavahāra, worldly concepts), the way of appearance of consciousness that is not deceived by temporary illusions has a powerful force. However, through wisdom, it is realized that the result is not born in ultimate truth, because the cause of producing the result is impermanent, and the cause itself is empty in nature. In this way, when the result is proven to be unborn, emptiness is also proven. Because the nature of things (Sanskrit: vastu, referring to all tangible or intangible things) is unborn, this is fully explained as emptiness. Third, what is the dharma that was said to exist in the level of consciousness and not exist in the level of wisdom? In short, it is the five aggregates (Sanskrit: pañca-skandha, the five elements that make up the individual of sentient beings). --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
