If one practices emptiness, wouldn't it lead to the cessation of benefiting others? Answer: No. As mentioned earlier, when a yogi practices emptiness in this way, there is no doubt that a mind of benefiting others will arise. The second part has two aspects: explaining that emptiness must be practiced with the essence of compassion; and explaining that by practicing in this way, one will manifest the non-abiding nirvana. Explaining that emptiness must be practiced with the essence of compassion: The first part has two aspects: explaining that if one practices emptiness without benefiting sentient beings, there is a danger of falling into the extreme of annihilationist nirvana; and explaining that the nirvana of the Lesser Vehicle is not sufficient for this. The first part has two aspects: explaining that benefiting sentient beings is the training of ultimate bodhicitta; and explaining that even if one directly realizes emptiness, taking rebirth in samsara is not contradictory. The first part has four aspects: explaining that one must accomplish the benefit of sentient beings; explaining that one must abandon attachment to sentient beings; summarizing the way in which compassionate ones naturally engage in benefiting others. The first point: explaining that one must make amends for past favors; explaining that one must give happiness to others as atonement for past harm; explaining that since all happiness and suffering arise from benefiting or harming sentient beings, one must accomplish the benefit of others. The first point is: In the past, those sentient beings who have been my parents, relatives, and friends, and have benefited me, I must repay those sentient beings. The second point is: In the prison of existence, sentient beings tormented by the fire of afflictions, just as I have given them suffering by harming them, so too, in the same way, it is appropriate to give them happiness. The third point is divided into explanation and exposition. The explanation is: All the desires for happiness and prosperity in the world, and the aversion to the undesirable results of the lower realms, arise from benefiting or harming sentient beings. The second part has two aspects: explaining that all happiness arises from benefiting sentient beings; explaining that all suffering is the result of harming them. The first point is: If one can attain the unsurpassed state of Buddhahood by relying on sentient beings, then what about the enjoyments of gods and humans? Are the reliance of Brahma, Indra, Shiva, and the protectors of the world solely brought about by benefiting sentient beings? --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If none of these three (referring to the three situations mentioned earlier) exist, then what is there to marvel at? There is nothing to marvel at. Secondly, the various sufferings experienced by sentient beings in hell, as animals, and as hungry ghosts, all arise from harming sentient beings. Even in the heavens, there is hunger, thirst, mutual beatings, and torments that are difficult to avert and are endless, and these are the results of harming sentient beings. Therefore, we should recognize that the good and bad realms are manifestations of the beneficial and harmful results experienced by sentient beings. Thus, the Buddhas teach us that the mind of enlightenment (bodhicitta) is what all things should rely on, and we should protect sentient beings as we protect our own bodies. The second point is to strive to abandon attachment to sentient beings as if it were poison. As the scripture says: 'Those who are free from attachment, the Hearers and Solitary Realizers, do not attain the supreme enlightenment. Only by not abandoning all sentient beings can one attain perfect enlightenment.' Summarizing its meaning: 'Thus, the arising of beneficial and harmful results should be observed. How can attachment to self-interest remain even for a moment?' The third part includes the doctrine and the explanation. First, the perfect enlightenment that arises from the sprout of the true bodhicitta, which has compassion as its root, is entirely the fruit of benefiting others, and this is what the sons of the Buddhas practice. Second, if someone cultivates the essence of emptiness and compassion, and their mind of benefiting others becomes firm, then they will be terrified by the suffering of others, and even abandon the joy of meditative absorption to enter the Avici hell. Such an action is amazing and worthy of praise. Those who do this, giving their own bodies and wealth to sentient beings, are not surprising, because as mentioned earlier, doing so is the noblest code of conduct. Fourth, recognizing that all phenomena are empty of inherent existence and revealing the workings of karma and its results as they are, is the amazement of amazements and the wonder of wonders. Because they understand that appearance and emptiness are not contradictory, and they follow the teachings of true bodhicitta. As mentioned earlier, this way of entering into altruistic actions is not only the teaching of true bodhicitta, but the way it is revealed here is also revealed entirely from its opposite, because its result is... --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
