All the Dharma instruments, such as the kapala bowl, etc., and all the precious things like the Lama's Dharma robes, were offered to Rinpoche. Then he said, "Now I have a word from my heart to say, come tomorrow." After that, because the Lama's body was unwell, Rinpoche was very sad. Rinpoche could not leave the Lama, and returned to the Lama many times. The Lama said, "I have already told you all the teachings of the mundane and supramundane. Now, in this dark night, why do you come back again and again? Go back to sleep, come early tomorrow." Rinpoche said, "I cannot leave you, Lama, my heart is very painful, I don't want to go back to my residence. Can I sleep by your bed?" The Lama agreed. The mother said, "You father and son talk day and night, endlessly, the words tonight are endless, don't let me sleep! If you talk tomorrow, the day will dawn!" She was very unhappy with Rinpoche. The Lama also said, "Come early tomorrow." Then he stroked Rinpoche's head, kissed his face, etc., very lovingly. Rinpoche prostrated to the Lama and then returned to his residence. In that year, on the eighth day of the eleventh month of the Water Rabbit year, in the morning, Rinpoche was preparing to go to the Lama according to the Lama's instructions, when a monk came out and said, "Khenchen Rinpoche said, you go now! You have to be the offering master for farming." Rinpoche said, "I have to go to Rinpoche for a while, can I go after that?" The monk said, "If you don't be the offering master, the Dharma service cannot be performed, go now!" Rinpoche thought, "Although I have to go to the Lama, Khenchen Rinpoche's power is very great, if I don't ask for instructions, I'm afraid it's not good." So he went to Khenchen Rinpoche and said, "Rinpoche told me to go to him for a while, can I come back after that?" Khenchen Rinpoche said, "Now we have been delayed for a long time, the sun is about to rise! It's okay to go for tea now." He did not allow him to go again in the morning. When two people came to inquire about the Lama's illness, it was said that a doctor had been invited from Yadong (a county under the jurisdiction of Xigaze City, Tibet, China) to pray. All the disciples gathered there were happy. As soon as those people left, an attendant secretly whispered something in Khyentse's (mkhyen sprul) ear. Khyentse stopped reciting the scriptures and suddenly stood up. He went to the Lama's room in the monastery. All the other disciples gathered there cried out loudly and lost consciousness. Then, thinking that the Lama must have passed away, he prepared to go to the Lama's room. All the monks said, "Prepare the offerings, texts, and so on." Then everyone went to the roof of the monastery. He himself prepared everything and gradually entered the monastery. Seeing that there was no one from the doorway of the Lama's room, he gently opened the door and went inside. He placed the Lama's feet on his head and prayed and made aspirations.
