While residing in practice, one day the Lama said, "You should stay in a strict retreat at the confluence of the three deities, planets, and evil spirits on that slope of Potala Mountain." The Lord said, "No matter how I examine my own experiences and dreams, it seems uncertain what will become of your life. Please impart to me all the new treasure empowerments and transmissions that you have not yet received." The Lama said, "I have already entrusted to you all the instructions and secret oral teachings, like carving a salt statue, from the source of the mind transmission lineage, without relying on texts or examples. I have no further instructions to give you beyond that. If you wish to please me, stay in retreat." The Lord said, "I will certainly stay in retreat as instructed by the Lama, but I beseech you to grant me permission to come before you, precious Lama, every day." The Lama said, "You must not come for one hundred days. After that, you may come." Although the Lord had no desire to be separated from the Lama, he could not disobey the command and remained in strict retreat. After about two months, a dakini, who was said to be holding a burning sword, spoke these words: "E Emaho! That vast, cloudless sky appears as the basis of all containers and contents. That vast, boundless ocean appears as the abode of all jewels. The master possessing the three wisdoms is the friend of all intelligent beings. This powerful emanation hero shines in the midst of mothers and dakinis. The seven horses that dispel the darkness of beings are beautiful in the expanse of the cloudless sky. These are just symbolic expressions; you are wise, so contemplate them well." After saying these words, the Lord felt uneasy but did not dare to leave the retreat. Then, gradually, he went from the retreat to the Lama's presence. When he reported in detail the signs of being a servant of the Dharma protectors, the Lama was very pleased. At that time, it began to rain, and a thunderclap sounded from the sky directly above the Lama's residence. The Lama said, "Before I reached sixty-nine years of age, I had never heard thunder above my head. This thunder now is a sign that it is time for me to go." The Lord thought, "Whether I look at how my own prophecies have been obscured or at the Lama's words, it seems that he is about to depart." Then, he prostrated to the Lama and wept, saying, "Lama Rinpoche..."
