It should be determined in the past. Fourth, showing examples of appearing and speaking as if non-existent: If one wonders, what is the appearance of what is called "I" like? It is like an illusion that appears even though it does not exist in reality. And speaking of "I" by name is like speaking even though the meaning of what is being said is not established, like speaking of a rabbit's horn. At all times, even if one is attached to "I", if one searches among the aggregates, there is no object to be found. The place of origin and the place of going are also completely non-existent. Like the appearance of an illusion and speaking of a rabbit's horn. This verse is a transitional verse summarizing the meaning of the chapter. Second, establishing the selflessness of phenomena, divided into four points: searching for the basis of naming, destroying the clinging to permanence of true existence, attacking the flaws of benefit and harm, and collapsing the false nest of hope and fear. First, searching for the basis of naming, divided into two points: searching for the meaning designated by the name and establishing its emptiness; and how the play of dependent origination arises from emptiness. The first of these has three parts: how to establish the emptiness of phenomena gathered by one's own continuum, applying reasoning to other phenomena not gathered by it, and how even if the name and meaning change, they are empty because they are not established by nature. First, the way to establish the emptiness of phenomena gathered by one's own continuum: Like one's own head, if one clings to any phenomenon as if it were a true object, thinking "this is this", then that is called the self of phenomena. If it exists, then the meaning designated by each name should be found on the object, so it should be examined in this way: Why and to what is the so-called "head" designated? Is it because it is the first part of the body to form? Is it because it is round? Or is it called the head because it points upwards? The head is not the first part of the body to form. Not everything that is round is called a head. And the so-called above and below, if examined and analyzed, are not established. Hair is not the head. Skin, bones, brains, and the eyes, ears, nose, and tongue are also not the head. If these are separated, they are not the head, but if they are gathered together, is it called the head? If the head of an animal is cut off and first broken down into coarse particles and then into extremely fine particles, even if it is shown to all the people living in Jambudvipa (Earth), it will not be called a head. Moreover, with water...

Even if you knead it together into a whole, it is not called a head. Therefore, the so-called "head" is merely a verbal designation, and one should understand that the object it refers to is nowhere to be found. Similarly, the eye itself is a pair of bubble-like things, and if you separate the eyelids, tears, blood vessels, and blood, etc., then these are not the eye individually. Nor is it the eye when gathered together. It is also not the seer, the seer is the innate awareness itself, and not this bubble that is now called the eye, know that there is a seer in dreams and in the bardo. The ear is also, separating the ear canal and skin etc. into separate parts, or gathering them together, is not the hearer. The nose is also, separating the nostrils and skin etc., or gathering them together, is not the smeller. The tongue is also, separating the skin etc. into separate parts, or gathering them together, is not the taster. How should one properly combine these reasons to understand? Similarly, the so-called body is also, the outer spine and ribs etc., and the limbs such as hands, and the inner lungs, heart, liver, gallbladder, stomach, spleen, kidneys, intestines etc., and the hand is also the scapula, arm, wrist, knuckles, skin, bone, tibia etc. Similarly, the parts of the hand, the scapula, arm, wrist etc., and the foot is also the hip, thigh, calf etc., and for these also separate their respective parts such as skin, bone etc. Consider that these individually and gathered together are not the foot etc., and thereby realize their nature as emptiness. Second, applying reasoning to other things not included in this, for example, the outer mountains and houses etc., also separate and examine their respective parts of earth, stone, grass, trees etc. Other sentient beings of other continuums, such as humans and horses etc., are also like this. Furthermore, for things, such as a drum, it does not refer to the wood, it does not refer to the leather, it does not refer to the outside and inside etc., apply the previous reasoning to all things, and thereby know that they are empty of truth. Third, from the change of name and the position of things, it is also not established by nature, thereby knowing the reason for emptiness. For example, making an awl from a knife, the name knife changes to awl, and then making a needle from the awl, then the name awl will also change to needle, therefore, knife and awl etc. are merely imputed names, and are not established from their own side.
