It is unreasonable to think that only I (my view) am established. If someone says that when the body of a person who has realized emptiness is touched by fire and water, and struck by arrows, spears, sticks, etc., pain will arise. Then, until the realm of the exhaustion of dharmata is reached, dualistic appearances will not cease. Until they cease, the appearance of benefit and harm will arise continuously, but in reality, even the fire of hell cannot burn (the realized one), which shows this. Having said these words, he disappeared. Again, at one time, when I met the great accomplished Saraha (Saraha, Sanskrit: Saraha), I requested: Venerable great accomplished one, please tell me, what should I use to purify obscurations? How should I practice the deity? What should I use to subdue demons? Please grant me teachings. He replied: Hey, great being, you must attack the weaknesses of benefit and harm. What is called obscuration is ignorance of the nature of the ground emptiness, and ignorance and its stable state are called obstacles. This cannot be purified by ordinary efforts such as striving for virtuous actions of body and speech. Therefore, by ascertaining the nature of reality through discriminating wisdom, obscurations will naturally be removed. Where do all the beneficial virtuous actions of body and speech reside? Where is the treasury of accumulation? The source of arising? The place of existence? If you examine and analyze all the places you go, and find that there is nowhere to be found, then what is benefit attached to? If you examine the nature of the mind's emptiness, whether it is inside, outside, or in between, whether it is at the beginning or the end, and find that there is no benefit, and thus determine that there is nowhere to be found, then it is merely accumulating merit in samsara. Similarly, in which direction is the heap of accumulated sins located? Where is its storehouse located? By examining the emptiness of the mind, whether it is inside, outside, or in between, whether it is at the beginning or the end, where has it caused harm? Like this, if you carefully observe the mindstream of a person who always engages body and speech in virtuous actions, and a person who for one lifetime engages in evil, then there will not be even a particle of difference in all the attachment, aversion, hope, fear, acceptance, and rejection in the minds of these two people. Liberation also comes from the mindstream being liberated, and delusion also comes from the mindstream being deluded. Until the mindstreams of both people are liberated, there is no difference at all in wandering in samsara. Therefore, good and evil are merely temporary differences that produce happiness and suffering, and do not go beyond merely increasing samsara. Like this, good

If you do not ascertain it, the path to liberation and the merit of accumulating virtue temporarily will be confused, and you will not attain the fruit of omniscience. If you do not ascertain sin, you will not recognize that ignorance of your own nature is the obscuration and the basis of error, and you will not grasp the cause of error. Therefore, there is no choice but to be endlessly deluded in samsara, so it is important to understand the importance of ascertainment. Furthermore, regarding the so-called gods of benefit and protection, by examining the three aspects of where they first arise, where they dwell in the middle, and where they ultimately go, you will find that they do not exist anywhere. Among the objects of the senses, in which object do they exist—sight, sound, smell, taste, or touch? In which element of the outer container and inner essence do they exist? If you consider it from the perspective of the mind, they can be broken down into atoms and even smaller particles. Also examine the names of the various elements and the nature of the things themselves. Also examine how these gods bring benefit, and examine harmful demons in the same detail, and you will realize that they do not exist anywhere. All happiness and suffering are merely appearances and experiences of the mind, like a dream. Gods and demons do not bring anything on the basis of being able to bestow benefit or harm. If you think that demons cause harm, then they transcend the realm of sight, sound, smell, taste, and touch. They are merely called demons, so how do they cause harm? By examining, you will find that they do not exist anywhere, but are empty, and you cannot see their existence. Due to the influence of delusion, people even divide their own bodies into good and bad parts, considering the upper body to be clean and clinging to it like a god, and considering the lower body to be dirty and clinging to it like a demon. In this way, hope and fear arise continuously. Due to the strong bondage of self-grasping, experiences of happiness and suffering arise continuously. All of these are merely appearances and experiences of samsara, and there is nothing that truly exists apart from that, which can be illustrated by the example of a dream. Understanding the key point of this is to eliminate obstacles to meditation. This eliminates all obstacles of not trusting and not engaging in meditation, thereby generating trust in the meaning of the nature of reality and gaining unwavering conviction, and by being free from the obscuration of ignorance, one gains control over the great power of awareness. It is also the profound root of the Pacification and Severance practices, because one does not seek other gods apart from one's own awareness, and one becomes certain that there are no other demons apart from one's own thoughts. Therefore, this is indispensable for all practices and exorcism rituals.
