Due to the obscuration of the Buddha's own face by ignorance, the radiant body of the fundamental nature and all wisdom dissolve into the inner radiance. The outer radiance shifts outward, manifesting as five lights and spreading as the five elements. The way this happens is: When the wisdom of the Dharmadhatu is obscured by ignorance, the outer radiance appears as a blue light. This is the inner element, called the essence of space and the great element. Because of the arising of true clinging to the light, it appears in the sky. This is called the outer element, the small element, or the manifestation of the impurities of minute particles. Similarly, when mirror-like wisdom dissolves into the inner radiance, the outer radiance appears as white, which is the essence of water and the inner element of the great element. From this, the appearance of water is the outer element of the impurities of the small element. When equanimity wisdom dissolves into the inner radiance, the outer radiance appears as yellow, which is the essence of earth and the inner element of the great element. From this, the appearance of earth is the outer element of the impurities of the small element. When discriminating wisdom dissolves into the inner radiance, The outer radiance appears as red, which is the essence of fire and the inner element of the great element. From this, the appearance of fire is the outer element of the impurities of the small element. When accomplishing wisdom dissolves into the inner radiance, the outer radiance appears as green, which is the essence of wind and the inner element of the great element. Because it is regarded as a thing and clung to as real, it appears as wind, which is the outer element of the impurities of the small element. Thus, because these lights reside within, the appearances of various colors and the five elements appear continuously. Secondly, the way in which the eight aggregates of consciousness, together with the appearance of objects, expand is as follows: The manifestation of the five bases of delusion as power is like this: When the base is obscured by ignorance, the alaya consciousness, by its nature, does not think of anything and does not appear as anything, like empty space. For example, like the state of deep sleep and fainting. In this state, what is boundless is the essence or nature of delusion, which is the great wave of ignorance. From this, the wind of karma of the kalpa shakes, which is the essence of jealousy. Its function is to extract clarity from emptiness, which is the alaya consciousness, residing in the essence of hatred. From this, clinging arises merely to the appearance of self, which is the afflicted mind, residing in the essence of pride. From this, the mind arises, placing on the fundamental emptiness the capacity for appearances to expand.

The part of manifest clarity abides in the nature of desire. Those also manifest as outer skills from the five natures of inner radiance. The nature of the five poisons is like fire, from which arise afflictive thoughts like sparks spreading. Thus, on the empty and clear part that expands equally with the alaya and mind, the place where appearances such as forms arise exists without obstruction. From the cause of the movement of karmic winds and the potential to manifest the basis, both causes and conditions gather together. Relying on the basis and not different from the basis itself, various forms appear in a related manner. Thus, wherever the place where form appearances arise, it is merely nominally called eye consciousness. For example, the place of appearance, like the ocean, is called the object, and the form appearance, like the sun, moon, and stars, is called the grasped. From that, the grasping, the subtle mind consciousness, names that form, grasps it as meaning, and takes the three feelings of pleasure, pain, and neutrality in a way that sees it as a real thing. This is called the grasping mind of the eye. Similarly, the place where sound arises without obstruction is the object, what appears as sound is the grasped, and the consciousness that takes it near is called the grasping mind. This is also the interdependent arising of the gathering of causes and conditions as mentioned above. In this way, the place where smell appears is called nose consciousness, the place where taste appears is called tongue consciousness, and the place where touch appears is called body consciousness. It is merely a nominal way of saying this, and it is not that the orifices appear to be different, as shown by the appearances of dreams and the intermediate state. Third, that matter is not saying that appearance is mind, but rather that it is merely the way it appears from causes and conditions and interdependent arising. Therefore, the summary of the key points is: Thus, the way of arising of outer radiance from inner radiance is not like saying that appearance is mind, but rather that from inner causes and conditions alone, external appearances arise in an interdependent way. For example, the appearance of images of the ocean, moon, and other sun, moon, and stars is an appearance of causes and conditions and interdependent arising. Different from this, some people think that appearance is mind, and think that these external appearances are conceptual thoughts and their own mind itself.
