It is not about suppressing thoughts, nor about practicing. It is about knowing that experience is of a false and unreal nature, and that the appearance of experience vanishes like mist into the sky. As it is said in Dzogchen: "Experience is like mist, it vanishes and goes away." If you suppress thoughts, it is like blocking the mouth of a great river. As Padampa said: "Suppressing thoughts is like water bursting forth on the grass. Suppression cannot contain it, Dingriwa (place name)." Orgyen Rinpoche (Guru Rinpoche) said: "Although one may have much knowledge from building up meditation, I surpass in the knowledge of breaking down meditation." Therefore, abandoning all the proliferation of memory and thought, and abiding in a state of unattachedness and non-grasping, is the most important key point. Having said this, he disappeared. Again, showing the true way of conduct, for a while, self-appearance is not ultimate, etc., is the instruction. Again, for a while, in the charnel ground where self-appearance is not ultimate, in the place where the mountain of fire is burning, when I met Zur Chung Sherab Drakpa, I said: "Please, Lama, grant me the essence of your heart, a concise and meaningful instruction." He replied: "From countless eons ago, those who have accumulated merit and made aspirations, and whose karmic connections have ripened, if they wish to attain the state of omniscience, the state of Buddhahood, then at all times and in all ways, they must have devotion to the Lama, love and pure perception towards their Dharma friends, and compassion towards all sentient beings. These four – contemplating impermanence – are indispensable. First, rely on the virtuous friend, who is the root of the path, and thereby extract the essence. As it is said in the Compendium: "The wise Lama should always be relied upon, why? Because the qualities of the wise arise from that. Just as the sick rely on the doctor to be healed, rely on the virtuous friend without distraction." Therefore, the Lama to be relied upon, whatever Dharma he teaches, should teach and clarify with the essence of Dharma, the truth of ultimate reality, as the core. Such a virtuous friend can lead us on the right path. If we divide it into subcategories, as it is said in the Damtsig Saldrak: "General, guide, samaya, empowerment, Restoring broken vows, liberating the mindstream, six masters of oral instruction." Therefore, as the owner of the entirety of the teachings

The one who is revered as sacred by all, and who has received a little kindness, is the general teacher; the teacher who leads into the Dharma gate like an abbot of ordination; the one who bestows vows and empowers is the teacher of vow empowerment; the one who becomes the place of confessing misdeeds is the teacher who makes up for deficiencies; the teacher who liberates knowledge like a Dharma preacher; the one who shows instructions and bestows transmissions is the teacher of instructions and transmissions, and there are six ways of saying it. In particular, here, the one who bestows the empowerment that ripens oneself, and the guidance that liberates, along with the instructions and transmissions, and clearly shows the wisdom of the inner meaning, is the essence of all lamas gathered together, and the completion of the unified lineage. Therefore, one should rely on it as it is said in all the tantras and transmissions, and from the three doors of body, speech, and mind, with an attitude free from deceit, one should strive to accomplish whatever pleases the lama, and it is important to maintain devotion without interruption. With the deep-seated devotion that such a lama with three kinds of kindness is the great Orgyen (Padmasambhava) himself, when sitting, one should meditate on the lama on the crown of the head; when walking, one should meditate on the right shoulder; when sleeping, one should meditate on the heart; when eating and drinking, one should meditate on the throat. As the support for prayer, as the place for circumambulation, as the essence of self-awareness and clear light, and as the field for accumulating merit, one should focus on it. Without separating from the state of the four wisdoms, and by diligently praying and begging for refuge, the non-conceptual wisdom of the mindstream is forcibly transferred. As Drikung Kyobpa Rinpoche said: On the snow mountain of the lama's four bodies, if the sun of devotion does not rise, the stream of blessings will not descend, so be diligent in this devotion! Thus, meditating on the sacred Vajra Lama, praying, receiving empowerment, and blending heart and mind, etc., are the ripening of all stages of the path of generation and completion, and it is a profound and rare near path that causes one to obtain all the supreme and common siddhis in one go. As it says in the Ati Great Array: What need is there to meditate on hundreds of thousands of deities? The lama appearing in the center of one's own mind is the most supreme! Better than attending to the Buddhas of the three times, attending to the lama is countless times better! In short, one should not do anything that displeases the lama, even for a moment.
