One must adopt or reject even subtle causes and effects. As the great Orgyen (Padmasambhava) said, "The view is higher than the sky, and the results of actions are finer than flour." In terms of conduct, the view should not be mixed up. For example, one needs to be like a lion, the king of beasts with sharp claws, whose majesty cannot be overcome, standing proudly on the snowy mountains. It must be so. If the virtues of body, speech, and mind are lost in other seemingly profound places, and the view and practice are suppressed, and one's life is spent only accumulating merit in samsara, it is like being bound by golden fetters. If the Dharma is like summer flowers, each one more splendid than the last, and one strives diligently, but abandons the profound view and practice, then at the time of death, one will inevitably remain ordinary and become sustenance for samsara. Merely seeking temporary happiness and desiring the status of gods and humans will bind one with the fault of not attaining the fruit of liberation. If one gains firm faith in the profound Dharma of view and practice, even if one sees or hears the merits of other virtuous practices, one's view and practice will not be suppressed. In particular, some say that even if one realizes the view of emptiness, one must cultivate compassion from elsewhere. However, such compassion that separates self and others is not free from the mind of attachment and aversion. Such bodhicitta is merely aspiration and will not lead to actual practice. If one follows these views, it is like saying that even though water is within oneself, moisture must come from elsewhere; similarly, even though fire is within oneself, one must seek warmth from elsewhere; even though wind is oneself, one hopes for coolness from elsewhere. This will inevitably lead to the direction of recognizing that samsara and nirvana are of the same nature of great emptiness, and realizing it from the depths of one's heart, being certain and decisive, which is the compassion of playing together in samsara and nirvana. Apart from that, there is no other compassion that can be called bodhicitta. The key points of view and practice, etc., are suppressed. Thus, even if one relies on the guru's instructions and truly recognizes the state of the ground view, if one does not become familiar with it, but only remains at the level of understanding, and is content with that, stopping there, and then, like before, clings to the mundane affairs of samsara, hating others as enemies, and being attached to oneself as friends, etc., being dominated by afflictive emotions and delusions.
