In reality, it is also explained. In all the treatises of the Tantras and the generation and completion stages, it is said that in the morning session, one meditates with signs, and in the afternoon session, one meditates without signs. However, it is not that one first achieves Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) and then, after achieving that, one cultivates Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观). Many great Siddhas (成就者) have also said that one does not seek Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) separately, but cultivates Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) from the very beginning. And for the Kagyupa practitioners, it is not entirely fixed whether they seek meditation through view or seek view through meditation. Sixth, the method of meditating on the union of Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) and Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观): This includes the reasons why both Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) and Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) are needed, and how to unite them. First, without Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止), the mind will be agitated and one will not attain the correct meaning. Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) without Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) is unstable like a lamp in the wind. Also, Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) without Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) does not eliminate the latent tendencies of afflictions, as explained in the 'Stages of Meditation' and the 'Explication of the Thought'. The reason why both are needed is stated in the 'Moon Lamp Sutra': 'The power of Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) makes the mind unmoving, and Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) makes it like a mountain.' Second, if you wonder how to unite them, even if you cultivate Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) before attaining the ninth stage of mind-abiding, there is a way to unite them separately. However, here, the way to transform into the ultimate union of Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) and Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) is: after obtaining Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) that evenly places the mind in the nine stages, free from the faults of dullness and agitation, one should rely on it to diligently cultivate Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) that distinguishes dharmas. Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) will also naturally enter, and like the ninth stage of mind-abiding, it will become effortless without needing to be fabricated. Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) will also become pure and refined, and blend together with the mind-abiding, entering together, which is the union of Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) and Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观). In the 'Hearer's Ground' it says: 'Therefore, in whatever way, etc., it is called the path of connected operation.' In the final 'Stages of Meditation' it says: 'If' etc. In the oral instructions of the 'Perfection of Wisdom', it says below that: It is also unreasonable to think that Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) does not contemplate any dharma, and that Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) only contemplates. If that were the case, the Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) with signs, such as the generation stage, would not be possible. In Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) also, the 'unmoving Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观)' is explained in the 'Stages of Meditation'. So, in general, the essence is the same, but the aspects are different. Seventh, the fruit of Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) and Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观): In the 'Explication of the Thought' it says: 'What are the fruits of these?' 'The complete purification of the mind is the fruit, and the complete purification of wisdom is the fruit.' This is the order of Śamatha (止,梵文:śamatha,梵文天城体:शमथ,梵文罗马拟音:śamatha,汉语字面意思:止) and Vipaśyanā (观,梵文:vipaśyanā,梵文天城体:विपश्यना,梵文罗马拟音:vipaśyanā,汉语字面意思:观) respectively. Also, it says there, liberation from the bonds of signs and bad rebirths. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
