As stated in the 'Compendium of Topics': 'Meditation, etc.' In the 'Friendly Epistle': 'Enjoying desires, etc.' In the 'Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment': 'Yogic peace, etc.' Regarding insight: 1-219 As stated in the 'Compendium of Topics': 'Sons of the Buddhas, etc.' 'With wisdom, etc.,' ultimately is perfect enlightenment. In the 'Bodhisattva Grounds': 'Bodhisattvas are meditation, etc.' In the 'Seven Hundred Prajñāpāramitā': 'Mañjuśrī's wisdom, etc.' These are the common aspects of tranquility and insight. Next, explaining the uncommon stages of meditation, which include: the stages of meditation on tranquility; Second, the individual stages of meditation on tranquility and insight, including: the stages of meditation on tranquility; the stages of meditation on insight; and the determination of how to cultivate tranquility and insight, in three parts. First, The methods for achieving tranquility include: the preparation for achieving tranquility; the aspects of the object of focus; and the methods for achieving tranquility, in three parts. The first part is: abandoning the previously mentioned objects to be abandoned, cultivating through possessing the seven qualities of meditation, etc., and accepting suffering, etc. As stated in the 'Lamp for the Path': 'Limbs of tranquility, etc.' In the first 'Stages of Meditation': 'Regarding tranquility, etc.' The seventh part is about the general aspects of the object of focus; how to focus on what; the beginning of the object of focus; and how to cultivate mindfulness and awareness, in four parts. The first part is about the pervasive object of focus; the object of practice and purification; the wise; and the object of focus for counteracting afflictions, in four types. The first type is the way of focusing on the latter three objects of focus, which is a distinction. If divided further, there are four types, among which focusing on conceptual images is mainly the object of focus for insight, but here it refers to focusing on the sign of conceptual meditation. 1-220 Focusing on non-conceptual images means focusing the mind on the object of focus without conceptual thought. The term 'image' refers to the fact that the object of focus itself is not real, but rather its appearance manifests in the mind. Focusing on the edge of things refers to 'as it is, abiding only as it is,' etc., which is the object of focus for insight. The second type is the special object of focus for desire, etc., which has been previously cultivated and will not arise later, and there are five types: contemplation of impurity, contemplation of loving-kindness, contemplation of dependent arising, contemplation of the division of elements, and contemplation of inhalation and exhalation. The third type is the special object of focus that can prevent the self of the person other than the aggregates, elements, etc., and there are also five types: aggregates, elements, sources, dependent arising, and being skilled in what is and is not. The fourth type is the object of focus that serves as a general antidote to all afflictions, namely the two truths and the four truths. These are the common objects of focus for insight, but are mainly discussed from the perspective of tranquility. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Then, the object of Shamatha (calm abiding) is to first focus on the objects of focus, causing them to appear. With any kind of mental certainty, without any other analysis, hold the mind. Second, practice the antidotes. If desire arises, then cultivate ugliness contemplation, etc., as stated in the Sutra Requested by Namaru. For the object of the wise, whatever person's object, in the sutra itself, it will become the object of the skandhas and dhatus. For the antidotes to the afflictions, such as tranquility, etc., it is said that it is sufficient to hold the mind in any equal state. Third, among the types of objects of focus mentioned earlier, what should one focus on initially? Although it is said to focus on each person's respective object, if conceptual thought is strong, then initially one must rely on wind, etc., focusing on only one branch of the object. As stated by Jowo in the Lamp for the Path to Enlightenment and by Dpawo. The initial reliance on an object is uncertain and can be as appropriate. The teacher Jangchub Sangpo said: There are two ways of looking, internal and external. Internal looking is focusing on the body and what depends on the body. For the body, such as deities and skeletons, etc.; what depends on the body, such as breath and subtle characteristics, etc. External looking is looking outward, such as ordinary pebbles, etc., and pure Buddha images, etc. In most of the Stages of Meditation, only Buddha images are mentioned, because this accumulates more merit. It is said that relying on one can expand to others. Fourth, what is very important for accomplishing Samadhi is mindfulness and awareness, and it is necessary to have moderate contraction and relaxation. Third, the methods for practicing Shamatha include: practicing the mind-abiding with the eight applications, practicing with the stages of the nine mental abidings, practicing these mental abidings with the six powers, and the way these have four types of attention. First, in the Madhyantavibhaga (Discrimination of the Middle and the Extremes), it says: 'Abiding therein, fitness, etc.' Second, in the Ornament for Clear Realization, it says: 'Focusing the mind on the object, etc.' Third, the six powers are: the power of hearing, the power of thinking, the power of mindfulness, the power of awareness, the power of effort, and the power of familiarity. Fourth, the four types of attention are: forceful attention, interrupted attention, uninterrupted attention, and spontaneous accomplishment attention. It is said that these should be heard. If the practice of Shamatha is mixed with distraction, it will not be accomplished even after a thousand years. If one relies on the accumulations and diligently cultivates continuously, it will not take too long. The stages of meditation on Shamatha have been briefly explained. The Stages of Meditation on Vipassana (higher seeing) Second, the stages of meditation on Vipassana include: the general methods for practicing Vipassana and the methods for generating the view of Vipassana. First, in general, there are three types of Vipassana: worldly Vipassana, supramundane and inferior Vipassana, and Mahayana Vipassana. The former is the aspect of Shamatha and Vipassana. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
