So it is said. Subtle thoughts are considered signs of realization, which are wisdom corresponding to or associated with vipassanā (insight). Single-pointed intention on the object of focus is śamatha (calm abiding) with mindfulness. The state of not being in samadhi (meditative absorption) is called the mundane ground, while the dhyānas (meditative states) of the higher realms are called the ground of being in samadhi. Single-pointed intention gradually attains pliability. Once that is attained, even if one remains in samadhi for many days, the suffering of both body and mind ceases at that time. Along with the attainment of happiness and joy in body and mind, one is able to enter samadhi. So, does knowing the nature of the mind mean that there are no external appearances? That is not the case. If the common karma and habitual tendencies, which are similar to eye disease, have not been reversed, just as knowing the fault of eye disease, merely knowing the delusion and nature of the mind cannot reverse it. As Virupa said: 'If one does not abide in the state of thought, and is distracted by signs, the habitual tendencies of dualistic appearance will not be reversed. Just as in the eye of one with cataracts, even if one knows that there are cataracts, unless the eye disease is purified, the appearance of cataracts will not cease.' However, once the nature of the mind is realized without error, even though the way all appearances appear does not cease, they appear as inseparable from the essence of the mind, thus the state and movement, the essence, become one. This is illustrated by the example of water and waves, the state and movement are both of one taste in emptiness, the nature of which is without inherent existence, while the changes in experience appear different. Upon awareness, state and movement are considered one, while appearances are labeled as different. The meaning of individual self-awareness is inexpressible and inconceivable. Introducing innate mindness: When one's own mind is free from the faults of sinking and excitement, and is not tainted by thoughts of good and bad, relax and rest in its natural state. When observing the state or condition of that mind, even if all coarse and subtle conceptual thoughts are blocked, it will self-liberate, self-purify, and self-pacify, entering into a state of clarity without any clinging. This is called śamatha (calm abiding) because of focusing on the state of the mind. In that state, the awareness does not become unclear, dull, neutral, or scattered, but the essence of the mind is clear and uninterruptedly self-aware and self-illuminating. The state of awareness and clarity is inexpressible, and there is some experience or realization, like the awareness of the three aspects of appearance. This is a thorough study of the object of observation. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Because of the ability to fully distinguish, it is Vipaśyanā (insight meditation). Prakṛti (nature) can refer to both nature and the ordinary. In general, it eliminates obstacles to achieving all goals. The tongue meditator says, 'The demon of dullness enters the head,' meaning that the experience of virtue is not clear; 'The demon of speech enters the tongue,' meaning that one likes to talk and, in particular, cannot keep the secrets of experience; 'The demon of distraction enters the heart,' meaning that consciousness is scattered and the mind is not calm; 'The demon of walking enters the legs,' meaning that one cannot stay in solitude and wants to walk. To pacify these, one should visualize the lama in the crown of the head, throat, and heart, respectively, and make strong prayers to pacify the respective obstacles. In short, if the merits of view and meditation are hindered from increasing, then the accumulated merit and common attainments will also be obstacles to achieving supreme accomplishment, so one should take countermeasures and use various skillful means to eliminate obstacles. One should especially strive and meditate on the aspects of skillful means such as the acceptance and rejection of cause and effect, devout faith, pure appearance, and compassion. It is very important to arrange all good interdependent relationships, abandon all bad ones, and properly accept and reject virtue and vice. In short, it is essential to examine whether it has become an antidote to self-grasping for the time being. 'May the wish-fulfilling jewel of reality, which arises from the wisdom of Thubten Gyatso, be the adornment of hearing, thinking, and meditation, bringing prosperity to the benefit and happiness of oneself and others.' This is a note by Jyakral Sangye Puntsok. Sarva Mangalam (May all be auspicious)! --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
