Effort (Tibetan: རྩོན་པ།): It refers to not being in an inappropriate place (Tibetan: གནས་མིན།), not being drowsy, not being overly sleepy, and knowing the method. This is explained in the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* (Tibetan: སའི་དངོས་གཞིར). The second point is: preventing the coarse appearances mentioned earlier, focusing on the appearances and the qualities of the Buddha, and examining with discriminating wisdom. Expanding the object of focus, praising, etc., are explained in the *First Stage of Meditation* (Tibetan: སྒོམ་རིམ་དང་པོར). The appearance is like taking the appearance from the light of a butter lamp in a quiet place, or from the light of a fire, or from the mandala of the sun, and focusing the mind on the manifestation and clarity of all those lights. Furthermore, the *Compendium of the Perfection of Wisdom* (Tibetan: ཕར་ཕྱིན་བསྡུས་པ།), the *Essence of the Middle Way* (Tibetan: དབུ་མ་སྙིང་པོ།), and the *First Stage of Meditation* explain this in detail. Third, identifying the nature of *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā*: This is explained in detail in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* (Tibetan: དགོངས་འགྲེལ།), the *Ratnamegha Sūtra* (Tibetan: དཀོན་མཆོག་སྤྲིན།), the *Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṃkāra* (Tibetan: མདོ་སྡེ་རྒྱན།) and its commentary by Asaṅga, and the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, etc. According to the perspective of the Sūtra school, the characteristics of having *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* are: having attained pliancy (Tibetan: ཤིན་སྦྱངས) and continuously attaining the samādhi that one has entered into, and abiding in it. This is explained in the *Intermediate Stage of Meditation* (Tibetan: སྒོམ་རིམ་བར་མར). So, what should *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* be called if pliancy has not been attained? Names that are in accordance with *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* are explained in the *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* and the *Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom*. So, to what extent does the path of *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā* become completely pure? The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* says that when drowsiness and sleep are stopped, the path of *śamatha* is purified; when agitation and regret are stopped, the path of *vipaśyanā* is purified. Fourth, showing the distinctions of *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā*: If *śamatha* is distinguished from the perspective of its nature, there are two types: mundane *śamatha* and supramundane *śamatha*. If it is distinguished from the perspective of its function, there is *śamatha* that abides in happiness in this life, etc. Although there are these statements, the root and commentary of the *Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṃkāra* explain nine methods of abiding. The distinctions of *vipaśyanā* are: The *Saṃdhinirmocana Sūtra* says that there are three types: that which comes from the object of focus, that which comes from seeking, and that which comes from discrimination. The *Compendium of Topics* (Tibetan: ཀུན་བཏུས) and the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, etc., explain many distinctions. Fifth, examining the order of *śamatha* and *vipaśyanā*: In most of the Sūtra school's treatises, it is said that one should first cultivate *śamatha* and then cultivate *vipaśyanā*. For example, the *Mahāyāna-sūtrālaṃkāra*, the *Letter to a Friend* (Tibetan: བཤེས་སྤྲིང་།), the *Bodhicaryāvatāra* (Tibetan: སྤྱོད་འཇུག), the *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra*, and the *Instructions on the Perfection of Wisdom*, etc. Although some think that it can only be this way, there are also cases where pliancy has not been attained. Therefore, this is intended for those who enter in sequence. Because there are cases where *vipaśyanā* is attained without attaining *śamatha*. Furthermore, the *Compendium of Topics* says: 'Some have attained *vipaśyanā*, but have not attained *śamatha*. Therefore, relying on *vipaśyanā*, they strive for *śamatha*.' The *Yogācārabhūmi-śāstra* also says this. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
