It was heard that among the two venerable brothers (ston mched gnyis, honorific for teachers), the younger one was not residing there, but the elder one, Chobar (chos 'bar), was. So he intended to visit and asked the lama Khauwa (khau ba) for permission. Khauwa said, 'Those so-called practitioners (sgom chen pa) are mostly hypocritical. The initial instructions they give to disciples are often incomplete, holding something back. Besides the name 'Yoriba (yod ri ba),' there is actually nothing there. If you have faith yourself, practice the Guhyasamaja (gsang ba 'dus pa) sadhana written by Thaga (tha ga), which is a treasure of the teachings.' But he did not agree to let him go. He insisted, 'I have firm faith in the lama.' Only then did Khauwa say, 'Okay, go then.' So, the lama took a can of tea (ja sgro ba), a yellow silk cloth (dar yug ser po), and a piece of armor (khrab gcig), and went to Sagthang Ding (sag thang dings) to meet the venerable Je Gonpawa (rje dgon pa ba). Je Gonpawa was a hidden yogi (sbyas pa'i rnal 'byor pa), who, although appearing as a monk, wore a coarse cloth (ra thul gcig), practiced yoga postures (yoga gcig yog gin), and was talking loudly by the fence ('pho le ba'i). He offered a piece of armor as a gift and requested teachings. Je Zhang (rje zhang) said, 'Are you crazy? I don't even know what kind of Dharma you want. You new tantric practitioners (gsang sngags gsar ma ba) have too many delusions. We teach Dzogchen (rdzogs chen), fundamental darkness (rtsa mun ti), and Brahmin (bram ze) teachings here.' He did not agree. He repeatedly requested, but Je Zhang kept saying, 'I don't know,' and refused to teach. The lama thought, 'Does he really not know?' So he went back. Then, the father of Josras Ochok (jo sras 'od mchog) said, 'Je Zhang initially told me that you were my lama's son, and he hugged me and cried, saying, "They say that the living cannot meet the dead, but now we have finally met. There is Dharma in this old body, come quickly!"' That's what Josras said. Je Zhang said, 'If that's the case, there might be a violation of vows (dam tshig), either send him back or let him decide for himself.' So he called him back and explained the situation in detail. Je Zhang said, 'I wasn't really ignorant just now, I was just pretending. And I haven't taught Lamdre (lam 'bras) before, so I don't know what Dharma to teach. You should go back and not delay your Dharma connection. Now there are Panchen (pan chen), Panchung (pan chung), Marpa (mar lo), etc., turning the wheel of Dharma (chos 'khor) here. When Marpa Rinchen Zangpo (mar lo rin chen bzang po) and Kashmiri Panchen Panchung are invited, the way practitioners listen to teachings is different from them. Let's talk about it next winter when the Dharma assembly is over.' Therefore, the great lama said that Ochok's father was very kind to me. After that, he went back, and later in the winter, he went to Ding (dings) to request initiation (dbang bskur ba) and listen to the teachings. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Before receiving the oral transmission, the guidance on the mandala and the Vajrasattva mantra (hundred-syllable mantra) had been completed. On the night when the oral transmission was to be given, Je Zhang's (honorific, master) tongue felt uncomfortable, so he did not teach the Dharma. Je (honorific, master) said, 'There seems to be an obstacle of samaya (sacred bond) between us, so we still need to recite the Vajrasattva mantra.' The Lama (master)'s thought was, 'Others have no fault. When I requested before, I said that I was a Dzogchen practitioner and did not know Lamdre (Path with Result). Does he think I don't know?' A thought like this arose, and he thought it was a fault, so he recited the Vajrasattva mantra targeting this thought. The Lama's tongue discomfort disappeared. When teaching the Dharma, in some difficult-to-understand places, the master made notes on his hand with the tip of a vajra. Je (honorific, master) said, 'For the profound oral transmission, do not do this, it will harm your samaya.' So he was not allowed to do so. In this way, for a total of four years, the precious oral transmission of the root and branches was completely transmitted according to the order of the samaya of the master lineage. After that, he gave permission for the condensed practice and sealed it: 'Within eighteen years, do not show this Dharma to others, let alone say that I know this Dharma.' After eighteen years, can you explain it to others? Can you write it down? You yourself are the owner of the Dharma, you can do whatever you want, it depends on you. I think this Dharma needs an owner, you have appeared, I am relieved.' In general, if you mainly practice, then in this life you can attain the supreme siddhi (accomplishment) of Mahamudra (Great Seal) without abandoning your body, and become a yogi master. If you listen and explain, you can benefit immeasurable sentient beings. However, you will have three disciples who attain the siddhi of Mahamudra without abandoning their bodies, and seven yogis who attain forbearance.' This is the prophecy. A master like this Shang (honorific, master) has immeasurable samadhi (meditative concentration) qualities and has firm direct perception. He can transform into two or three birds or wild animals, etc., and has various kinds of miraculous powers. Some manifestations of the body have even been seen by the great master. He can transform into seven bodies and say, 'I have not been able to cultivate to this extent, only this much.' He also predicted the fate of other people's descendants, etc. The great master requested Sagton and Shangpo Tonpa and others to also receive the oral transmission. The master said, 'Sagton is a vessel, Shangpo Tonpa is barely suitable as a vessel, but he does not want to receive it. Please ask for me.' So Je (honorific, master) was requested. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------
