"Bāyadao." This is called, for example, just as the wind moves the trees, the wind of Bāyada causes movement, so the wind of Bāyada is called the cause of movement. "Like a man and a youth, the cause of simultaneous arising is Niḥśvāsa." This is called, for example, just as a man rides a horse, the man relies on the horse and arises simultaneously with the horse, so sounds rely on breath and arise simultaneously with breath, therefore the wind of Niḥśvāsa is called the cause of simultaneous arising. "Vowels and consonants, are the cause of all-pervading." This is called, for example, just as wherever the shape of a fruit is, the four great elements pervade there, so all that is spoken is pervaded by sixteen vowels and eighteen consonants, therefore vowels and consonants are called the cause of all-pervading. "The appearance of similar aspects, is called the cause of equal division." This is called, for example, just as an image arises similar to a face, so the sound of letters arises similar to the aspect of the appearance of discrimination, therefore the aspect of the appearance of discrimination is called the cause of equal division. Now, the differences in the tones of the letters arising from those causes are shown, that is, the different fruits are due to the different causes that preceded them, therefore, in order to show that they are distinguished by causes, "From this the difference in tones, is distinguished by the causes, it should be known as preceding." Thus it is said, in order to show that it is distinguished by seven causes and seven nature roots. "The cause and nature of that." Thus it is said, of which the causes have already been explained, in order to show what arises from which root, and what arises from which place. "Arising from the straight vowel, from the ka group onwards in order." And so on, it is widely spoken. Among them, these arising from the straight vowel, the root A, are called. "From the ka group onwards in order, the five groups etc." This is called, starting from the ka group, it is called the five groups, namely: ka kha ga gha nga, ca cha ja jha nya, Ṭa Ṭha Ḍa Ḍha Ṇa, ta tha da dha na, pa pha ba bha ma. These are the five groups, because they are the collection of their respective groups, they are called groups. "A Adastha" thus it is said.

The four, ya, va, ra, and la, are called 'end-placed' because they are located at the end of the group. The term *uṣmaṇa* refers to the four, śa, ṣa, sa, and ha, and is called 'warm' because it relies on breath. The term *antakṣaya* refers to kṣa, because of *kṣa-yaṃ-ta*. To explain the names of these letters, it is said, 'The thirty-four letters of the place, are known as name and masculine.' From the letters of sound and the letters of place, these letters are called letters of place, because they rely on their respective places. From the vowel letters and the letters of name, they are called letters of name, because they clearly show each syllable. From the feminine letters and the masculine letters, they are called masculine letters, because they are clear and strong. Similarly, from the inner letters and the outer letters, they are called outer letters, because they seem close when heard. Now, intending to explain the distinctions of place, first, to explain what arises from the throat, it is said, 'The first group and the fourth of *uṣmaṇa*, along with the caesura, are from the throat.' The ka group and ha, and the caesura, arise from the throat. To explain what arises from the palate, it is said, 'The second group and the first of *atasmin*, and the third of *uṣma*, arise well from the palate.' The ca group and ya, and śa, arise from the palate. To explain what arises from the crown of the head, it is said, 'The third group and the third of *atasmin*, and the second of *uṣma*, arise well from the crown of the head.' The ṭa group and ra, and ṣa, arise from the crown of the head. To show what arises from the teeth, it is said, 'The fourth group and the third of *atasmin*, and the third of *uṣma*, arise completely from the part of the teeth.' The ta group and la, and sa, arise from the teeth. To explain what arises from the lips, it is said, 'The fifth group and the fourth of *atasmin*, arise from the lips.' The pa group and va, arise from the lips. The place of origin of kṣa is said to be from the throat and the crown of the head. Now, to explain the five subdivisions of the five groups, it is said, 'From the five groups, each of the five, the first is the strong sound of its own place,' and so on.
