I should not show the mudra to everyone, otherwise the accomplishment will decline. Matters suitable for secrecy should be examined by oneself and kept secret. What should be entrusted is the teaching of the guru and Dharma friends. Thus, these five roots that have been taught, if summarized into the root body, speech, and mind vows, then the vow of the guru and Dharma friends is the body vow. Deities, mantras, and mudras are regarded as limbs of recitation, and are the speech vow. Not divulging secrets is shown as the mind's retention, and is the mind vow. Furthermore, if summarized into the two vows of practice and protection, the speech vow is the practice vow. The others are the protection vows. The limb vows are reversed from the Kriya and Yoga Tantras, and are taught through the vast conduct of skillful means and wisdom. However, their mutual combination has already been explained above. Moreover, if only non-abandonment and acceptance are mentioned here, then in accordance with what is said in other tantras, and the twenty-eight distinctions of vows spoken by Guru Padmasambhava himself, they should be gathered into one collection and explained. That is, what are they? The five vows of non-abandonment, the five vows of acceptance, the five vows to be practiced, the five vows to be known, and the five vows to be cultivated, totaling twenty-five limbs. By the power of the root body, speech, and mind vows, they are known as the twenty-eight vows of the Great Yoga scriptures. Furthermore, these vows of non-abandonment, etc., are taught in groups of five, which is also said to be due to the power of the vows of special deities. Therefore, although they are distinguished separately by the power of the five families of deities, they will become the common vows of all yogis. Among them, the five vows of non-abandonment are: not abandoning the five afflictions. Then, since the afflictions are the cause of samsara in the three realms, why are these not abandoned? Because there are three reasons: if one fully understands their nature, they are not abandoned because there is no substance to be abandoned, and not abandoning the afflictions that are seized by skillful means, and not abandoning great afflictions. Among them, not abandoning due to fully understanding their nature is: for example, like a mirage-like stream and color cannot be abandoned.

For example, the nature of afflictions is the unreal imputation, which arises from the power of imputing the apprehended and the apprehender. Therefore, imputation is like water in a mirage; because it is imputed, it has no substance. Although it has no substance, imputation itself is also deceptive, like the color of a mirage; it appears in a certain way, but in reality, it has no substance. Just as the color of a mirage, because there are no great elements as a basis, there is no form of color that gathers with it; therefore, it does not obtain the nature of color. Similarly, afflictions are extremely deceptive; although they appear to arise as desire and so on, at the very moment of their arising, they cannot obtain such a nature. Therefore, for something that has not obtained a nature, the establishment of abandonment is also not accomplished. Wherever it is said that afflictions are abandoned, it is spoken according to the intention of those who are conceited. For example, in the Sutra Demonstrated by Renowned Immaculate One, it says: 'Is it not liberation by abandoning desire, hatred, and ignorance?' The goddess said: 'Those who say that liberation is by abandoning desire, hatred, and ignorance are the arrogant ones; for those who are without self, the very nature of desire, hatred, and ignorance is liberation.' It is said like that. Furthermore, in the Hearer's Vehicle, those who say that afflictions truly exist and can be abandoned, also do not have the conceit of thinking that they themselves have abandoned afflictions when they have become arhats. Thus, the Bhagavan has said in many Great Vehicle sutras. Therefore, bodhisattvas who have entered the Great Vehicle, who realize the selflessness of phenomena and persons, who understand all phenomena as like illusions and mirages, and who do not become conceited by these illusions, will not develop the conceit of abandoning afflictions. In particular, yogis who have entered the Great Vehicle, who realize all phenomena in the manner of the four equalities and the three purities, it is not appropriate for them to have the conceit of abandoning afflictions. How is it then?
