That is, the practitioner should not transgress these. Therefore, whatever the lineage, even by pleasing one's own deity of the lineage, one should also strive to follow all these differences of vows that are declared to be in accordance with the lineage. These that have been spoken of are known as the root vows of the Yoga Tantra, and are also known as the root downfalls. Depending on the individual, they become common vows. The branch vows should also be taken as appropriate from those that are declared in the Action Tantra. Among the special vows, the special vows of the individual should be known from what is taught in the Action Tantra. The special vows of the deity are those spoken of in the Vajrasekhara, which was taught above, which are known as the fourteen root downfalls from the five families, and in the Tattvasamgraha, which are known as the five kinds of vows according to the distinctions of the four families and five deities. Although these are to be kept by all reciters, the vows of the deity that one is practicing should be the main ones, because the difference is said to be there. The special vows of the scriptures are like the distinctions of asceticism and celibacy that are known in the Action Tantras, such as bathing at the three times, changing three clean clothes, always guarding against obstacles, abiding in fasting, and not eating impure or defiled foods, etc. One should act accordingly with regard to the many forms of conceptualization that are spoken of, which are in accordance with yoga and without fault. However, some of the transgressions that have been established, which become obstacles to yoga and become the cause of obstacles and other afflictions, do not need to be particularly relied upon. One should practice liberation from the two extremes, and it is said that even those such as bathing should be made superior by profound and extensive practices. How is it taught to be superior? In this way, the ritual of bathing at the three times is taught in the Action Tantra, but in the Yoga Tantra, a ritual of bathing that is deeper and more extensive than that is taught. The Vajrasekhara says: "Every day, one should diligently combine the four kinds of bathing as much as possible. How the yogi should bathe, I will explain in order. The vows

Abiding in the lotus womb is said to be the first bath. The second bath is confession and supplication, and so on. Dissolving the mudra is the third. The fourth is water, the last. Through these bathing rites, the wise should cleanse themselves thus. It is said. Similarly, regarding changing three clean garments at three times, the yoga method speaks of changing garments, as it says: In the ritual of the practitioner, three garments should also be changed. The first garment is said to be abiding in the vows and purifying the practice. The second is having shame and embarrassment. The third is the garments of the Sage, thus proclaiming the three garments. It is said. The saying "always protect from obstacles" here refers to the mudra yoga itself as the great protection. Therefore, it is protected by realizing the absence of obstacles. It is said in that very text: Each day diligently bind and perform the protection ritual. There will be no obstacles, do not fear. This mind, which is extremely difficult to tame, becomes pure by thinking there are no obstacles at all. It is said. Furthermore, it is said not to deliberately associate with minor faults and things that harm yoga, saying: By tormenting the body with asceticism, yoga will not be realized. And so on. These are the vows of specific texts. Through this reasoning, one should also understand how to appropriately combine the internal texts. The remaining vows should also be appropriately combined as stated. Furthermore, there are vows of protection, vows to be practiced, and vows of practice. Know that these three types of vows are also included together. Among them, the vows of protection are mostly characterized by abstaining from what should not be done, as stated. Not abandoning deities, mantras, and mudras, from the perspective of not disparaging, is a vow of protection. The vows to be practiced are, as mentioned above, things to be practiced for great meaning. For example, what destroys the Mahayana vows is anger, while patience is holding on. However, in some cases, if one becomes patient, one may also decline. That is also the lower realms...
