Thus it is said. Therefore, in the system of Secret Mantra, valid cognition is said to be of three types: the sacred word, the sacred instruction, and the sacred reasoning. These are not deceptive in realizing the nature of reality, and thus are established as valid cognition. In the system of Secret Mantra, the object of this sacred reasoning is shown to be beyond the scope of ordinary perception and inference. Moreover, it is considered to be established through scripture and reasoning. As it says: In the context of explaining the fruits of Secret Mantra, both those that can be directly realized by ordinary faculties and those that cannot, it is said: "Free from the net of perception and conceptualization, obtaining the fruit of meditative realization, which is completely beyond the scope of inference and what is to be inferred, established by trustworthy scripture, and endowed with yoga and reasoning, one's own experiences are shown as the fruit." Like that which is said, this explanation of the realization of the deity's nature as the fruit, is also shown to be beyond the scope of ordinary worldly perception and inference. So, what kind of valid cognition does it possess? It possesses what is established by trustworthy scripture, it possesses the direct perception of yoga, it possesses reasoning, and the fruit of one's own experience that possesses these is shown as valid cognition. To this, it is said: "What kind of reasoning, other than ordinary perception and inference, and other than the direct perception of scripture and yoga, is established as valid cognition?" To this, it should be stated here that in the context of Secret Mantra, the reasoning that is separately established as the three valid cognitions of scripture, instruction, and reasoning, refers to the meaning that arises in reliance on scripture and sacred instruction, and is determined by the wisdom of individual discernment, which is not contradictory to dependence, function, and the nature of reality. The reasoning that is generally known in the texts has five meanings: The inherent nature or the way in which the nature of phenomena abides is also called reasoning, in the sense of a definitive term. The word reasoning applies to the meaning of how one's own nature abides and what is in accordance with the Dharma. Furthermore, that which is capable of indicating what is to be known, becoming a sign or mark, is also called reasoning.

Also, because it possesses Dharma, because it obtains fearlessness, and because it is harmonious and without contradiction. The correct knowledge of knowing these is also called reasoning, just like the previous definition of the term. The Dharma that is known and obtained, the path to obtaining that itself is also called reasoning, the definition is the same as before. The well-composed combination of words that reveals these is also called reasoning, because the well-composed term called "Pratipada" (梵文天城体:प्रतिपद,梵文罗马拟音:pratipada,汉语字面意思:right approach) is called reasoning. The distinctions of reasoning's own nature are fourfold: the nature of phenomena, action, dependence, and established validity. Among these, the first three commonly indicate both the reasoning of meaning and the reasoning of proof. Establishing validity only indicates the proof. The general meaning of the four types of reasoning is that the basis of all reasoning is the reasoning of the nature of phenomena, because everything that is to be known and done does not go beyond the nature of phenomena. Action and dependence are merely conceptual elaborations on that very nature of phenomena. Establishing validity is also merely a conceptual elaboration on those three types of reasoning. The necessity of establishing the four types of reasoning is that when eliminating doubts in knowing knowable objects, even if the self-nature is established in the mind, doubts arise about its nature of phenomena, and when it is established as a characteristic in terms of its own nature, it is called the reasoning of the nature of phenomena. When doubts about the action of things are eliminated and it is established in terms of the result, then it is called the reasoning of action. When doubts are eliminated about the manifestation and establishment of the self-nature of things from the perspective of arising and terminology, and it is established in terms of the cause, then it is called the reasoning of dependence. When the connection between cause and effect is established, then it possesses both action and dependence. When it merely shows how the self-nature of things exists and is established as the actual meaning, then these are not proofs, but are established as the reasoning of meaning alone. Thus, the self-nature of those three types of reasoning is also merely the nature of phenomena, and it is merely conceptually elaborated into three due to the difference in necessity.
