One should wear clothes with humility, like a weary traveler on a long journey eating the flesh of their child; one should not wear them with arrogance and gluttony. One should eat like the balance of a scale, consuming food of varying weights and sizes in a balanced manner; one should not eat if it is unbalanced. One should eat like strengthening the pillars of an old house, or like wiping away the dirt from a cart, and not with a mind driven by evil thoughts. One should understand the body to be like a raft on water, eating to sustain it, not for the sake of desire. Thus, even when possessing the proper vessel, place, time, and intention, one should not eat excessively or frequently. One should not eat too much or too little, nor should one abstain completely. Cleanliness in clothing lies in its material, color, stain, and manner of wearing. The material should be made of pure substances such as linen, ramie, or bark. As for color, mantra practitioners, householders, and those who do not observe divine vows should wear only white. When observing vows, one should combine them with deities and activities. Even among clothes used for activities, one should not discard the lower garment except when sleeping or bathing. Generally, one should not have only one set of clothes. When engaging in recitations and fire offerings, one should not discard the upper garment. One should avoid clothes that have been defiled or contaminated by others, as well as those that have become old or stained. It is said that one should change into clean clothes three times a day, once by washing them with water and alkali, and the remaining two times by cleansing them with secret offerings and incense. The tantras say, "The color of the source changes the color of the clothes," and "Clothes are either colorful or white." These statements are intended for those who uphold vows. Clean companionship means avoiding residing with or associating with Brahmins and heretics of other traditions, those who delight in them, and followers of the Lesser Vehicle. One should avoid living or even speaking with wicked and vile individuals who are the executioners of humans and animals. One should not share a bed with those who are excessively depraved due to indulging in desire and engaging in perverse acts such as adultery, and with those who have broken their vows.
