Because one desires liberation by abandoning attachment, three methods for abandoning attachment are spoken of: abandoning attachment by meditating on ugliness; abandoning attachment by meditating on mindfulness of breathing in and out, in order to attain mental equanimity, which becomes an antidote to attachment to desire; and abandoning attachment by meditating on the meaning of the four truths. The differences between the views, samadhi, and degrees of abandonment of the Shravakas, Pratyekabuddhas, and Mahayana are briefly summarized as follows: The view of the Shravakas is: realizing the absence of self in the individual. The samadhi is: abiding in a place with an object of focus. The degree of abandonment is: abandoning all connections related to existence. Thus it is said. The view of the Pratyekabuddhas is: realizing the absence of self in all phenomena included in the form aggregate of phenomena. The samadhi is: realizing that the meaning of words does not exist, abiding in the nature of phenomena that cannot be spoken of, causing the conceptualization of the apprehended to disappear, but because the thought of "unspeakable" enters, the conceptualization of the apprehender is not abandoned. The degree of abandonment is: whatever it may be, knowing that all arising phenomena are phenomena of cessation. Thus it is said. The Mahayana, in general, the view is: realizing the absence of self in both phenomena and the individual. The samadhi is: transcending all conceptualizations of the apprehended and the apprehender, obtaining non-conceptual wisdom, and abiding in the utterly pure realm of phenomena. The degree of abandonment is: completely abandoning all connections linked by habitual tendencies, obtaining omniscient wisdom. Thus it is said. Furthermore, the differences in the power of these samadhis are: the samadhi of the Shravakas has little power in purifying karma and can easily be destroyed by internal and external harm. The samadhi of the Pratyekabuddhas has great power in purification and cannot be destroyed by internal and external harm. Bodhisattvas, after attaining the first ground, obtain the basis of the ten powers, and then gradually increase, and at the tenth ground, obtain the power of the complete ten powers. The Tathagatas have inconceivable blessings, and the extent of their power is not a place to be measured. Thus it is said. There are also two types of Pratyekabuddhas: those who live in groups

Those with dull faculties rely on companions, while those with sharp faculties, like rhinoceros horns, do not rely on companions. Among these, individuals are of four types based on the distinction of entering and attaining results. There are also differences in abilities based on the differences in accumulating merit, the sharpness or dullness of faculties, and the differences in samadhi. So it is said. The Mind-Only school has two: those who assert the existence of aspects and those who assert the non-existence of aspects. Among those who assert the existence of aspects, there are two internal distinctions: those who assert aspects are real and those who assert aspects are false. Among these, there are those who assert that aspects have a basis for similarity and those who assert that they do not have a basis for similarity, and so on. Although there are many inconsistent assertions, they are all included in these sutras, so only these are discussed. Among them, the term "asserting the existence of aspects" means that the word "aspect" here refers to similar appearances. Those who believe in the existence of a basis for similarity say that the arising of consciousness in a form similar to the basis for similarity is a similar appearance. If there is no basis for similarity, then there is nothing at all, but because there is, it appears similar, so it is called a similar appearance. In short, the term "asserting the existence of aspects" means that although there is no external object, consciousness itself appears as if it exists, and there is a distinction between the apprehended and the apprehender. This is what they believe. Among them, those who believe in the existence of a basis for similarity say that although there is no external object separate from consciousness, there is a stable mind-essence that appears like an external object. Taking that as the basis for similarity, all consciousnesses arise in its form. So it is said. Those who assert the non-existence of a basis for similarity say that there is no second stage of appearance as external sense bases, but that consciousness itself appears as if it were an existing object. So it is said. Among them, the term "asserting aspects are real" means that everything that appears as body, place, and field of activity is the nature of mind itself. Therefore, it is truly real as it appears. It is also truly real in the state of sentient beings, and in the state of Buddhahood, all the arrangements of body and field are also truly real. So it is said. The term "asserting aspects are false" means that even in the state of sentient beings, the conceptualization that arises as the apprehended and the apprehender exists, and that is the non-real universal
