The Great Forgetting of Views. The Great Forgetting of Views. The Great Forgetting of Views, composed by Dharma Bhadra, is present here. Generally, the differences in views among beings are said to be whether they desire to pursue liberation or not, and there are also views that are transformed by worldly matters and the Dharma. Examined by Buddhists, there are worldly views and views that transcend the world. Here, I will briefly mention a few of these. Relying on spiritual friends and scriptures, this is the view transformed by the Dharma; and the worldly view is the one not transformed by the Dharma. If we differentiate based on these two, then the worldly view is: considering the external and internal objects, such as the body, place, and field of activity, as a real self. That is, relying on the body to view it as self, relying on what is related to it to view it as mine, and relying on what is unrelated to view it as other. Thus, one considers these three things to be truly existent. The view of self is to view it as self without detailed analysis of its characteristics. As it is said in the sutra: 'Children, from beginningless time, without analyzing the characteristics of self, arise with the thought that self exists.' It is like that. This is also to view it as permanent. Among these, viewing it as solitary is: beings always have the thought 'I am alone,' and the thought 'I am two or many' never arises. (That is, focusing on the body and viewing it as self, considering the place and actions related to oneself as mine, and similarly, relying on what is unrelated to view it as other. That is, viewing it in this way: others are not me, and I am not others.) Viewing it as equal is: even if we distinguish 'my body' and 'my mind,' we equally view it as self, and the thought of becoming multiple does not arise. Viewing it as pervasive is: however we distinguish between body and mind, the thought of separating from the self or existing independently does not arise. Viewing it as the agent is: even animals view themselves as agents, and due to attachment, the thought of engaging in various actions arises, thereby manifestly performing various actions. Due to performing these actions, one accumulates the habits of karma. The habits of karma

Due to the influence of attachment, the maturation result is accomplished, and consciousness arises. Thus, the connection of existence is continuously accomplished. That is called a "person" (Tibetan: གང་ཟག་, Sanskrit Devanagari: पुद्गल, Sanskrit Romanization: pudgala, literal Chinese meaning: person) or "grasping as a whole." The view of permanence is: Even when observing the body changing in stages such as youth, adulthood, and old age, the thought arises, "I am still the same 'I' as when I was young." Similarly, thinking, "From a previous life, I was born here; from here, I will transfer to another life," it is impossible for the thought to arise that "I am born in segments, one after another." There are two kinds of views transformed by spiritual friends and scriptures: outsiders and Buddhist insiders. Among them, the outsiders take the mundane "self" as the basis, and after thoroughly examining its characteristics, they distinguish whether "the self is permanent" or "the self is annihilated." Thus, although they are the same in viewing the self, they differ in their statements about what causes the external and internal objects of the world to arise. Some say, "This world is created by Ishvara (自在天)." Some say, "It was made by the self-maker." Some say, "It arose from something called 'Prakriti' (自性), which cannot be manifested and has become the cause of all things." Some, however, think, "It arose suddenly from no cause, and they do not want the action of producing results from it," thus holding a view of annihilation. Some think, "It arose from the power of time," thus viewing time as the cause. All views of "self" and "mine" rely on the five aggregates as a basis. Among them, there is one view of "self" and three views of "mine," making a total of four. Divided based on the five aggregates, they become twenty "mountains of aggregates of views." Among them, the view of "self" is: For example, from "Form is the self, like a master" up to "Consciousness is the self, like a master." Among the three views of "mine," viewing the five aggregates as mine is: For example, from "Form is mine, like a servant" up to "Consciousness is mine, like a servant." Those who claim that the "self" possesses the five aggregates are: For example, from "The self possesses form, like an ornament" up to "The self possesses consciousness, like an ornament." The five aggregates are the dwelling place of the self.
