The views on 'I' are: from 'I exist in the form aggregate, like a container' to 'I exist in the consciousness aggregate, like a container.' Among these views on 'I,' some say that 'I' is connected to and possesses the aggregates. Some say that 'I' does not possess the form aggregate, nor does it possess the mind. Still others believe that 'I' or 'Purusha' is inherently pure from the beginning, not created by anything, is not birth, is not made, and does not create anything, therefore it is the cause of its own nature. Therefore, Purusha is not manifestly assembled, has no birth, no cessation, abides in its naturally pure essence, and is immutable in the three times. If one constantly habituates oneself to this, one will attain liberation. This is what the sage Kapila of the Samkhya school says. In the scriptures of the Samkhya school, it is said: 'Nature is unseen, the collection of three Gunas (Sanskrit: गुण, guṇa, qualities) universally produces. The opposite of that is Purusha, constantly habituate yourself to it.' They believe this and view it in this way. Among the types of views that regard consciousness itself as 'I,' there is one called the secret expounders of the Vedas, who say this: 'The minds of all beings in the three realms of existence and all those who are liberated are the same, are permanent, are naturally pure, and there is no distinction. All the diverse appearances of the world are also mind, yet the nature of mind does not change into various forms.' A rebuttal to this: 'If one being is liberated, why does it not lead to the liberation of all beings? If one being is bound and suffering, why does it not lead to all beings being bound and suffering?' This is the rebuttal made by those who believe that the continuums are different. To this, they respond: 'If one pot is filled with filth, will the sky be filled with filth? If one pot is filled with essence and medicine, will the sky be filled with essence and medicine? Is there a difference in essence between the sky in the pot and the sky in all directions? Seeing beings as bound and liberated is because the nature of mind has not been seen, so liberation and bondage are seen as different. If the nature of mind is seen, there is no difference, all is the same. This one pervades all diversity, is permanent, is pure.' They view it in this way. Among these views...

It is said that the Blessed One praised the view that is the most excellent of all worldly views, which is called the "emptiness of the single self." Their view is as follows: This deceptive and unreliable world, both internal and external, which is entangled by the net of karma and afflictions, is not truly existent. What is truly existent is the thing called "self," which is subtle and imperceptible, only about one millionth the size of a hair tip. It is so subtle that even the wise find it difficult to comprehend; it is so imperceptible that it cannot be manifested by the minds of gods, asuras, and humans, etc. It is established by the scriptures spoken by all the great omniscient gods and the great sages who possess the five superknowledges, and it can only be inferred from actions and merits. Its nature is unchanging, but its state is subject to change. The self can be completely defiled or completely purified. The self is completely defiled because, when the self engages in evil deeds and evil thoughts, due to attachment and craving for desires, it engages in the path of the ten non-virtuous actions; due to attachment and craving for the five sensual pleasures, it generates craving, and due to clinging to various signs, the self becomes completely defiled. The self is completely purified because, when the self engages in good deeds and good thoughts, it abandons all sins and non-virtuous dharmas, correctly takes up the path of the ten virtuous actions, and by holding the asceticism of an ascetic who is not attached to all desires, and by attaining the samadhi of meditative concentration, abiding in the equipoise that does not cling to any signs, the self becomes completely purified. This is what they believe. In general, the basis for the two views of permanence and annihilation is: Those who hold to permanence believe that the Great Brahma is permanent, the Lord of Power is permanent, the self is permanent, nature (prakriti) is permanent, and atoms are permanent; from these permanent things, the impermanent world manifests. Those who hold to annihilation believe that there is no cause, no result, no action, and no special merit. This is what they believe. The Buddha summarized all these views and called them worldly views, because all of these
