exist, considering all dharmas to be truly existent. Some of these people believe that among the mental formations arising from the mind, some are truly existent, while others are nominally designated as parts and are not truly existent. This is what they believe. As for the term "substance," its own nature and definition are: In the treatises of the non-Buddhist Vaisheshika school, it is said that the nature of substance is ninefold, namely, the four great elements, space, direction and time, and self and mind, totaling nine, which are considered to be the nature of substance. The general characteristics of substance are: having action, having qualities, and being the cause of accumulation. The definition of substance is: that which is completely grasped by the word "thing," because it can be grasped and held, it is called wealth. For example, ordinary people in the world regard gold and silver as valuable and hold them as substances, while ordinary stones and the like are not valuable and are not regarded or held as substances. Similarly, those whose minds have been transformed by the teachings of the Buddha, who abide in views and are attached, rely on their own scriptures and reasoning to measure knowable objects with wisdom, and consider that whatever is established by its own nature and can be grasped and held is established as substance. Among the nine bases of substance of the non-Buddhists, all inner Buddhists agree that the substance called "self" is completely non-existent. Among them, some Shravakas believe that all the remaining eight are truly existent. Others believe that direction and time are also not truly existent, and the remaining six are truly existent. Still others believe that space is also not truly existent, and form and mind are considered to be truly existent. The Yogachara school believes that the four great elements are also not truly existent, and only mind is truly existent. This is what they believe. The Madhyamaka school believes that mind is also not truly existent in the ultimate sense. Correctly speaking, all dharmas are from the beginning unborn, without self-nature, and of the nature of the pacification of all elaborations. The tantric scriptures also believe that they are in accordance with the nature of the ultimate truth. These differences in views also arise from the basis of truly existent and non-truly existent. This is a brief explanation of the classification of views. Furthermore, in what is known as the lower and upper vehicles...

Starting from the basis of distinguishing between similar and different views, the specific differences in views are summarized and explained. In the tenets of Inner Buddhism, although all schools do not have differences in terms of higher or lower views, the higher ones can cut off the elaborations of the lower ones, so they do not regress. For those that have not cut off elaborations, there is a need to cut off elaborations, but even if they are cut off, the fundamental difference is not harmed, so they are not refuted. Therefore, all the teachings spoken by the Buddha are of one taste and one method, all tending towards Suchness and falling into Suchness. They are not like holding onto self or holding onto no-self, where the fundamental principles are different. Like this, merely by proclaiming no-self, the root of all things can be cut off. Therefore, all higher and lower vehicles only show the elaborations of things becoming more and more pacified, and there is no declaration of different foundations. Therefore, there are no separate foundations, paths, or traditions for the Great and Small Vehicles and higher and lower views, nor are there separate results. This should be understood. Those who slightly proclaim different doorways of the path can also be completely summarized into one method. These are like this: From the perspective of the Hearers' Vehicle, regarding the phenomena of aggregates, elements, and sources, the elaborations of the absence of self of a person are cut off. To this, the Mahayana practitioners would not say: Your absence of self of a person, there is another absence of self that is more superior than that. Nothing is added. Nor would they refute: It is not the absence of self of a person, but it exists. For those who have not cut off elaborations and believe that the phenomena of aggregates, elements, and sources are real, although there is a need to cut off elaborations, where are the phenomena called aggregates, elements, and sources? Who is saying it? What is its characteristic? Its characteristics are not harmed. Nor would they refute: It is not aggregates, elements, and sources, but self and the world. Then the Yogacara practitioners say: On top of that, all phenomena are completely empty of the reality of what is apprehended and what apprehends, which are completely imputed. When cutting off elaborations, the Yogacara Madhyamikas say: Besides your emptiness of completely imputed reality of what is apprehended and what apprehends, there is a more superior emptiness.
