It is like becoming that way. Thinking that one has attained a Dharma that is superior to (mine), being proud of one's own view, and despising the views of others, these three obscure correct mindfulness. Therefore, correct mindfulness is: not forgetting to protect the meaning of the definitive sutras and the instructions of the noble and virtuous spiritual friends. If these obscurations exist, they should be abandoned. For example, like a young son of a king or minister, intoxicated by fatness, who does not keep the instructions of the noble ones in mind. The tenth is the obscuration of self-nature, the ten practices are like the surface of a wooden board, obscuring each other. Therefore, those who abide in great meanings such as meditation do not practice small meaning practices such as writing letters. This is its meaning. Through these meanings, all the obscurations and faults of meditation can also be eliminated, and it is said that one should enter the path of liberation. So, what is the samadhi that possesses the eight efforts to abandon the five faults? The five faults are laziness, forgetting the object, sinking and excitement, non-application, and application. Among them, laziness will make one not listen to or enter the noble teachings. Forgetting the object will cause the mind to deteriorate, and even the heard teachings will become without memory. Sinking and excitement will not allow the mind that is accustomed to the meaning to arise. Non-application and application both hinder the union of calm abiding and insight. So, what are the eight efforts of abandonment? With faith, aspiration, diligence, and pliancy, laziness is abandoned. With mindfulness, forgetting the object is abandoned. With vigilance, sinking and excitement are abandoned. With intention, if there is too much non-application, it will be raised up. With equanimity, if there is too much application, it will be suppressed. Then, if calm abiding and insight are felt to be equal, the effort to cultivate the antidote excessively will not arise. Abiding in equanimity, relax the body and mind, thereby becoming accustomed to the meaning. This method is also the path of liberation. It is said like this. So, what is the samadhi that possesses holding, binding, blocking, opening, and destroying?

Thus it is said: Having caught this grasping monkey, and tied on the thieving cat, having demolished the empty, desolate house, having blocked all the cracks and windows, if the king's treasury is opened, those are always Buddhas. Thus it is said. Among these, catching the grasping monkey means catching what is appropriate to be caught from the dharmas of the skandhas, dhatus, and ayatanas. For example, the mind's consciousness is like a grasping monkey. It cannot enter into things that are reasonable, even if specifically entrusted. It enters into things that are unreasonable without being urged. Knowing that it always wanders meaninglessly, it must be put into the vessel of mindfulness and bound without wavering elsewhere. Tying on the thieving cat is also the same, tying on what is appropriate to be tied on from among the dharmas. For example, a cat, with its extremely slow and gentle behavior, steals the life of another without being noticed. Similarly, the afflicted mind, with its extremely subtle mode of movement, looks inward at the alaya and clings to self. Therefore, the mind's consciousness also arises possessing the same view as the view of the destructible aggregate, blessing everything with defilement. Therefore, if this is not bound by the mantra of wisdom that realizes the selflessness of all dharmas, the opportunity for liberation will never be opened. This is the practice of vipashyana. The former is the practice of shamatha. Demolishing the empty, desolate house means demolishing the empty city of the skandhas and ayatanas. Because these have no owner, they are an empty city. Because one's own essence is not established and is demolished, emptiness itself is also non-existent, and one should realize it as like space. This is also the practice of vipashyana. Blocking the cracks and windows means the five sense consciousnesses. These, arising from the windows of the five senses and naturally scattering to objects, are blocked by the power of being gathered into the mind, so that they do not scatter outward. This is also the practice of shamatha. Opening the king's treasury means being skilled in the characteristics of the alaya consciousness. For example, in the king's treasury, there are priceless treasures such as jewels, and also inferior substances such as poisons.
