Treatise on Entering the Mahayana Path Treatise on Entering the Mahayana Path ༄༅། །Herein lies the Treatise on Entering the Mahayana Path. A brief exposition on entering the Mahayana Path: Those individuals who desire to be liberated from the ocean of samsara and aspire to attain the unsurpassed enlightenment should, in the very beginning, investigate the characteristics of the afflictions. Why? Because it is proclaimed in the general teachings that beings are bound by afflictions and wander in the ocean of samsara. Following that, one should seek out the supreme path that serves as the antidote to those afflictions and diligently cultivate it. Why? Because without understanding the characteristics of the afflictions, one cannot comprehend their antidote, and without comprehending the antidote, one cannot know the means of cultivation. If one does not separate from those afflictions, one will not find the opportunity for liberation. By knowing just these points, one will come to understand all that is to be known. Why? Because by merely understanding the nature of the mind as it is, the state of the mind in delusion, and the state of the mind without delusion, one encompasses all that is to be known. Like the enlightenment of the Hearers and Solitary Buddhas, one will also not be born into a single aspect of liberation. Therefore, the method of examining the characteristics of the afflictions shall be explained. Thus, is the characteristic of what is called "affliction" something established as a real substance, by which beings are bound? Or is it something that, although there is no real substance to be abandoned, appears as if it is binding? One should know that afflictions do not have the characteristic of a real substance to be abandoned. How so? As it is said in the Hearer's vehicle, the noble Arhats have completely abandoned all the afflictions of the three realms that are to be abandoned by seeing and meditation, and having completely severed all connections to existence, they have attained the fruit of Arhatship. Thus, if one were to investigate how many categories of real substances there are in those afflictions abandoned by the Arhats, one would not find any categories of real substances. How so?
