Well then, like this. Among the afflictions to be abandoned by seeing, those to be abandoned by seeing suffering, and those to be abandoned by seeing the origin, etc., are they one substance? Or are they each a different substance? If we investigate, if they are one substance, then by abandoning only what is abandoned by seeing suffering, everything will be abandoned. If that is the case, then meditating on other paths will become meaningless. If it is said that they are each a different substance, then the four truths are merely a summary of all that is to be known, divided into the four truths. Because the object of focus is the four truths, the afflictions to be abandoned will undoubtedly become fourfold. If that is the case, then there is no fixed number for the various divisions of what is to be known. For example, even with just the truth of suffering, knowing the aspects of impermanence, suffering, emptiness, and selflessness is the forbearance of knowing the Dharma of suffering. Therefore, because of that, each of what is to be abandoned by seeing suffering will also become fourfold. If you say that they do not change because they are the same in the characteristic of suffering, then the truth of the origin does not go beyond the characteristic of suffering, because all conditioned phenomena are of the nature of suffering, and whatever is felt, the noble ones say is suffering. Similarly, the truth of suffering itself does not go beyond the characteristic of the origin. For example, like the non-Buddhists who say that the maker is the cause. For example, the cause does not depend on the effect, and always only does the work of the cause, and the effect never does the work of the cause, as they say. But Buddhists say that phenomena arise dependently, which is not like that. The cause also depends on the effect, and the effect also depends on the cause. In reality, the five aggregates of grasping themselves, in the manner of ripening, are established as a nature that is harmful like a burden, so it is the characteristic of suffering. And that itself will become a place where suffering manifests in the future, so it is the characteristic of the origin. Therefore, by focusing only on the five aggregates, by realizing the selflessness of phenomena, all afflictions will undoubtedly be abandoned. Furthermore, if someone...

Having categorized knowable things into countless types, if one realizes that these things have no self-nature, then all of them will undoubtedly abandon afflictions. On the other hand, if we focus on the individual, if a person is killed by a tree, and as a result, hatred arises towards the tree, starting from hatred towards one tree, to hatred towards two, three, or countless trees, are all these hatreds one entity, or are each of them different entities? If it is one entity, then burning one tree to ashes should cause all hatred to cease, but that is not the case. If each is a different entity, then merely stating their number, even if spoken until the end of an eon, would not be exhaustive. If they are to be abandoned, even if one hatred is abandoned at each moment at the end of time, the end of their exhaustion cannot be found. If many afflictions can be abandoned by one path, then the practice of many different paths becomes meaningless. If one affliction can be abandoned by many paths, then the distinctions of afflictions that are spoken of also become meaningless. If the distinctions of paths do not diminish afflictions even a little, then they will not be abandoned by many paths either. If they do diminish them, then afflictions are not one entity either. In that case, the number of entities of afflictions is uncertain. Therefore, according to the Śrāvakayāna view, there is no established entity of afflictions to be abandoned. How then do the noble Arhats abandon afflictions? Like this, the Arhats, because they realize the selflessness of the person, the magician of the view of the aggregates (འཇིག་ཚོགས་ལ་ལྟ་བ།, Sanskrit: satkāyadṛṣṭi, Romanization: satkāya-dṛṣṭi, literal meaning: view of the aggregates) is pacified, and thus all the illusions of afflictions are pacified. Even the view of the aggregates itself, if it is grasped by the aspiration for Bodhicitta, becomes a place of immeasurable accumulation of merit. If it is grasped by the wisdom of selflessness, the stains of afflictions appear pure, yet the entity of the stains does not exist. For example, relying on a dream, a dream appears; relying on illusion, an illusion appears.
